Job description
Bread & Butter is a popular and busy café in the centre of Truro, with a big following of loyal customers. We have a passion for good food and speciality coffee.
If you have solid hospitality experience and a hunger for making people happy with fantastic customer service, we want to talk to you.
Hours and days
We are looking for people who can work
- at least four days a week including some Saturdays and/or Sundays
- starting at 8.30am, and finishing between 3.30 and 4.30pm
- for the summer and possibly longer
IF YOU CAN'T DO THESE HOURS, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY. There is the possibility of some evening work too, over the summer.
As well as making perfectly timed coffees, the job is varied - you will be trained in how we do front of house, taking orders, running food and how to cook our incredibly popular fluffy American pancakes.
Our team is energetic, friendly, supportive, enthusiastic, fun and a genuine pleasure to work with. In contrast to many hospitality jobs, our team members tend to stay working here for a long time.
Experience of making cracking coffee is crucial, but equally important is that you’re enthusiastic, energetic and engaging and love making people happy.
Key areas of responsibility
Working with us, you’ll be doing a bit of everything, including:
- welcoming customers with a smile and warmth
- taking orders efficiently yet warmly
- serving people with care and confidence
- making the best coffee in Truro
- cooking the best pancakes and other food in town and arranging it beautifully on the plate
- clearing tables and the prep areas and making good friends with the dishwash-machine
- cleaning-up with the whole team at the end of the day.
Personal skills needed
We’re looking for someone with experience who can hit the ground running, but equally important is the ability to fit in and work well with the existing team.
Team player: we work well together as a team, looking out for ways to help our colleagues and the café run smoothly. You need to be comfortable fitting into existing routines and systems and taking instruction from the managers.
Great with people: you’ll need to have really good self-awareness as well as being bright, warm and engaging with people. You’ll know when to be friendly, and when to be efficient, and be able to articulate a message warmly yet succinctly.
Clean and tidy: you must be instinctively tidy and clean and comfortable with the constant need to keep our workspace this way too.
Not afraid to work hard: this place gets really busy, day after day. You’ll need to be comfortable working hard, looking for the next job to do to help your colleagues, however busy it’s been, and working calmly under pressure. We’re all on our feet all day, and there is a lot of carrying of plates up and down stairs, so energy and commitment are important.
Hard work though it is, it is rewarding too! We get great feedback from our very many happy customers, and the team here is great - and these make it a great place to work, have no doubt! The pay is above the Living Wage and the tips add to your monthly takings nicely.
What we offer
- above National Wage
- 28 days holiday, including public holidays, pro-rated to the hours you work
- a great team atmosphere
- team social events
- share of tips
- a supportive atmosphere and the chance to progress a career in hospitality
- optional pension scheme
- free and discounted food.
***********To apply, you MUST send a brief cover note telling us why you want this job and why we need you. If you want to send this on a video message by email we’ll give your application priority consideration.***********************
