Job description

About this job

The Bar and Catering Manager is a key role for Woolwich Works, with the food and drink offering being a vital income stream for the Trust. The Bar and Catering Manager will work alongside the Operations Director to ensure the smooth running of our food and drink service. This includes our café bar, the Visitors’ Book Café; the Worker’s Bar, our main space bar which only opens when we have shows and events in the Main Space; and our Hospitality offering, arranging food and beverage for smaller receptions and meetings, for both internal and external stakeholders, and arranging riders for incoming artists. This role will primarily be desk-based, but we will want you to be willing to get stuck in when required, covering holidays and working on busy nights.

You’ll put processes in place to maintain a high standard of quality and presentation. You’ll be overall responsible for food hygiene and ensuring the kitchen and bar areas are kept spotlessly clean.

You’ll be responsible for managing and training our Supervisors, Bartenders and people working with us on work placements.

You’ll look after our stock and manage the GP on both food and drinks. You’ll be responsible for cashing-up, and for ensuring that we’re selling and serving alcohol in line with the law, the conditions of our licence and general best practice. You’ll also place orders for food, drinks and sundry items – ensuring that we have the right amount of stock to serve customers while minimising waste and achieving good value for money.

Is this job for you?

We’re looking for someone who has significant experience managing a food and beverage offering at scale, ideally including both a café and a high-volume bar operation. Entertainment venue experience would be an advantage but isn’t necessary. You’ll already have some understanding of kitchen management, food hygiene and health & safety, and you’ll need to be able and willing to undertake food hygiene and H&S training that we’ll provide.

You’ll be experienced in managing staff and rostering a team, ordering stock and operational planning. You’ll need a good eye for detail and an understanding of consistency will be key – whether it’s a cheese plate or a cocktail, we need you to make sure it’s prepared to the same size, style and standard every time.

You’ll need to be passionate about training and enthusiastic about developing careers in the industry.

You’ll need to be confident with computers and confident with numbers – you’ll be expected to understand and control things like gross profits and stock levels, you’ll have overall responsibility for our EPoS (till) system.
