Job description
An opportunity has arisen to work as part of a busy portering team providing cover for holidays and sickness on an ‘as and when’ basis. This means that you will not have a regular shift pattern or regular, guaranteed hours and you may be asked to work at short notice. You may be required to work in general portering services which will include moving patients, equipment or post at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
Primary duties will include:
- transportation of patients on beds, trolleys, and chairs to and from wards and departments
- transportation of furniture, notes, pharmacy and other items on request
- transportation of deceased patients from wards and departments to the BRI mortuary
- collection and delivery of mail.
- other such other duties at a comparable level of responsibility.
You will need to have a flexible approach, to be able to operate a handheld device and have excellent customer-focused communication skills. You must be able to work as part of a team and also be able to use your own initiative whilst providing support and assistance to colleagues.
Previous customer service experience would be an advantage and you must have an understanding of the need for patient confidentiality and exemplar customer service and care.
- To move and transport patients, including their belongings, on beds, trolleys and chairs to and from all wards and department throughout the hospital site and transfer patients, using appropriate lifting and handling techniques.
- To move deceased patients from wards and transport to the Mortuary and complete the appropriate documentation.
- To lift, carry, handle and transport goods, stores, furniture, notes, medical gases, x-rays and any other items of medical equipment throughout the hospital.
- To lift, carry, handle and transport general and clinical waste, including confidential waste, dirty linen to appropriate disposal areas and distribute clean linen to wards and departments.
- To collect and deliver pharmacy boxes, which may include drugs and IVs to all wards and departments.
- To collect urgent specimens and transport to Pathology.
- To deliver blood products throughout the hospital.
- To receive, dispatch, sort and convey messages, documents, parcels and mail including recorded and special deliveries to all areas of the hospital.
- To clean wheelchairs and trolleys between patient moves and thoroughly clean designated trolleys and wheelchairs as per cleaning schedules.
- To connect and disconnect medical gas cylinders and complete appropriate documentation.
- To compact general waste using the onsite waste compactors.
