Job summary
The Emergency Department at QEHB have a fantastic opportunity for a number of ambitious, clinically excellent, proactive and forward thinking members of the nursing team to join the Senior Nursing team on a substantive basis! This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience, knowledge and progress within our Major Trauma Centre - Emergency Department.
One of the roles main aspects is to demonstrate and promote clinical excellence and quality patient care. We are looking for motivated applicants with new ideas to bring their expertise and leadership experience to the table to improve patient care and influence the daily running of this busy and demanding Emergency Department.
As the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will be expected to be the clinical expert and role model for your area of work and additionally show exceptional management skills to support the wider workforce in progressing forward in a positive way.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to be sponsored to enter the Applied Leadership and Management Module which is a Masters Level Module with dedicated study time to support this development.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
Applicants should be experienced and confident clinical leaders ready for the next step in their career. Departments continue to see change at a rapid pace and therefore the post holders will need to be resilient, motivating leaders who can empower those around them to instigate progress.
You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of care and will deliver this through accurate record keeping, audits and working with external stakeholders to monitor care delivery within your department. You will be involved in handling a wide range of quality controls including complaints; incident investigation; action planning; activity data; patient flow; IT systems and many more.
Applicants will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills demonstrating a hardworking attitude whilst remaining calm under pressure to deliver the high expectations of University Hospitals Birmingham.
It is essential for the post holder to demonstrate excellent decision making and leadership skills including supporting and managing a team of staff; sickness management; off duty and roster management; recruitment and selection and an understanding of finance and budget control.
You will be supported to flourish in the role with an excellent network and team of people who will support you in the daily operational pressures and aid your development within this senior position.

- Substantial experience working clinically within an Emergency Department at a Band 6 or above level with key skills and knowledge required to perform in this leadership role.
- Professional Portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
- Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a complex health care setting or Acute NHS setting working as a deputy Manager Band 6 position including the supervision and education of junior staff/ students .
- Can demonstrate understanding / experience / in practice based supervision / assessment as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
- Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility for pay and non-pay resources associated with the clinical service.
- Evidence of effective multi-professional working.
