Job summary

UHB is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; QE, BHH, GHH and SH. The post-holder will be required to work and rotate across all sites.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead with the implementation of the new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in Haematology, supporting Haematology, Special Haematology and Coagulation, blood transfusion and routine coagulation across all sites at UHB. The implementation includes working with the laboratory IT team for a 23 month fixed term full time post working between 08:00 - 20:00 and potential weekend working to fully test all the instrumentation.

There is also scope to support with current IT projects and changes in the department which will ultimately feed into the LIMS projects.

The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent investigations. The Haematology department has undergone many changes with equipment over previous years. Equipment includes Sysmex analysers on all sites and both BHH and QEHB have a fully tracked solution. Blood Transfusion has Grifols, with QEH currently validating this equipment, and Werfen across UHB for Coagulation, with the installation of an Accustar most recently.

We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards and MHRA approved.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working on the implementation of a new Laboratory Information System in a fast-paced department that is continually growing and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills while contributing to an integral part of the laboratory. You will work closely with the Laboratory managers and feed back from key meetings on the progress, tasks and developments in the LIMS project.

You must have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, with an IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent and experience of Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Coagulation. As a senior role the candidate must also have a MSc or Higher Specialist Diploma awarded by the IBMS or an equivalent You must have an understanding of IT and IT infrastructure in Pathology settings.

The successful candidate will take a pragmatic, flexible and enthusiastic approach to their daily workloads which will include but is not limited to; management of their own workload, mentoring and training of staff on the new LIMS, analyser troubleshooting and other day to day tasks required to be performed. Other IT related duties will also be carried out under supervision of the pathology IT team.

The candidate must have excellent attention to detail, able to clearly communicate any issues identified and troubleshoot if possible and ideally have knowledge of the IT host communication pathways involved within the Haematology department.

Qualifications

Essential

State registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) MSc, Equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) OR Equivalent Level 7 Post Graduate Certification or Diploma

Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines.

Post registration specialty training in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) guidelines

Experience

Essential

Evidence of continuing professional Development

Discipline specific proficiency for HCPC registration

Significant post registration experience in a specific laboratory discipline

A specialised knowledge of: biomedical science theory and practice in the relevant field

Troubleshooting in a specialised laboratory environment

Quality control and assurance

Knowledge and understanding of laboratory quality management systems and relevant regulatory body accreditation standards.

HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.
