Job description
The Transfusion department is seeking to appoint a Biomedical Scientist to join our team on a secondment.
In this role you will be using your knowledge gained from working in Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories to utilise the latest laboratory instrumentation in analysis and interpretation of blood samples in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures. You will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of professional expertise and quality.

As a Health & Care Professionals Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist, you will be heavily involved in the delivery of our service. You will prepare and process diagnostic investigations on biological specimens in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures (SOP), and will utilise the experience you have gained through training to work autonomously in all aspects of laboratory practise in the Haematology department.

- To oversee workflow and ensure workload is controlled and processed in a timely manner, to prioritise and work with other staff in the section to ensure continuous throughput and smooth workflow, maintaining acceptable turnaround times during times of high throughput.
- To prepare and process blood specimens according to agreed protocols, prioritising according to urgency of test and managing high volume workloads.
- To validate and authorise laboratory results
- Interpret and report results via hospital computer system
- Supports the specialist and senior team and is able to supervise the other BMS staff, trainees, Associate Practitioners and MLAs.
- Able to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Review of SOPs
- Carry out audits after appropriate training
- Perform temperature monitoring within the departments
- To participant in regular stock control management to ensure adequate stock is maintained for smooth running of the department.
- Maintenance and cleaning of equipment used in the department.
- Act as a deputy an area of the lab and be responsible for all documentation and techniques in that area.
- Assists in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance to recognise poor performance and act accordingly.
- Assists with the receipt of goods and maintenance of consumable stocks
- Aware of the cost of resources and to work as economically as practical in achieving objectives
- Suggests ways to improve working practices
- Performs any other duties, commensurate with the post and in the interest of the service
- Ensure compliance with good work practises required for the standards of UKAS ISO15189:2012/2022
