University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The post-holder will be required to rotate across all sites, although the main bases will be at Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Heartlands Hospital. We currently have vacancies primarily based at both QEH and Heartlands Hospital.
The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department is equipped with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.
Specialist Chemistry and Immunology provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressant's and steroids. There are manual methods using radio-immunoassay for alpha-subunits and ELISA for faecal Elastase.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast-paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills.
You must have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC registration and with experience of working in Chemistry. A specialist portfolio is essential for the Band 6 post.
The Department will consider a Biomedical Scientist on a learning contract, in the view of completing their IBMS specialist portfolio in the next 24 months and becoming a substantive Band 6 Biomedical Scientist. Candidates require HCPC registered with Band 5 experience; we will consider a band 5 trainee post on a learning contract.
The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and, after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required - including weekends. Shifts include Early (7:30-3:30pm), Day (9:00-5:00pm), Late (2:00-10:00pm) and Nights (9:45pm-7:45am).

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or
equivalent academic achievement that is
ratified by the Institute of Biomedical

Experience

Experience of working in clinical
