Job description
Maple is a cardiothoracic surgical ward. We care for patients pre and post surgery.
You will be involved in the care of patient. Additional duties include ECG , observations, blood sugar monitoring, preparing patients for theatre and keeping the ward tidy and stocked up.
Job summary:
1. To provide and maintain excellent standards of nursing care to an allocated group of patients, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
2. To carry out care and treatment tasks, delegated from professionally qualified staff, requiring a wide range of technical ability, numeracy and literacy skills as well as an excellent level of interpersonal skills.
3. To supervise, less experienced/new Health Care Assistants in the clinical area ensuring patient focused care is provided.
4. To provide any administrative and clerical support to the ward team.
5. To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any areas specified.

Main tasks & responsibilities:
- Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)
- Carry out tasks in delivering and supporting direct patient care with the support of a registered nurse. Able to demonstrate abilities and competencies gained to enable tasks to be delegated from professionally qualified staff.
- Able to perform more complex aspects of patient care, some with indirect supervision, eg, taking and recording or observations including ECGs, dressings under aseptic conditions, taking of venous blood samples as directed, in checking and preparing equipment and preparing patients for treatment, monitoring hygiene and nutritional needs.
- Keep clinical areas clean and tidy and maintain a safe, pleasant environment.
- Adhere to departmental and Directorate procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
- Assist in the restocking of supplies and maintenance of equipment.
- Be aware of and adhere to the Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Identify and report clinical risks to the ward manager so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
- Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitor in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.
