Job description
We are looking for a Principal Back-End Developer to join our digital team.
The position is based within the award-winning Audio Services development team. The position is working remote (from home) but may require occasional office visits, hot-desking at an office location is always available should the candidate prefer.
The team is high-performing and agile, utilising TDD and peer reviews. Our agile coach ensures that our staff, team and business continually learn and improve.
Our backend developers work alongside front end, full stack, UX specialists, SRE’s and product teams to create the comprehensive digital audio experiences our listeners love. They work across multiple platforms ensuring all customer facing digital systems can adapt and scale when under large loads. Large loads in our case equates to “tens of thousands” of concurrent users across multiple countries around the clock, with bursts into “hundreds of thousands”.

The systems are continually evolving to ensure Bauer Media stays at the forefront of the Audio space, the backend developers are tasked and entrusted to deliver the underlying functionality that makes the end customer experience appear slick and frictionless.
Typical duties Include:
- Software product and code oversight
- Able to apply simplification to complex situations and identify the key issues and priorities to be resolved.
- Manage conflict where variations of approach exist.
- Responsible for team-wide design, patterns and code approaches.
- Accountable for resolving technical conflict within and between multiple teams
- Supervising technical aspects of projects
- Providing on-call support for new and existing applications as required or as requested
- Recommendation of new tools and technologies that can help to increase productivity
- Contribute to design standards and documentation
- Growing and developing senior, mid-weight and junior team members through coaching, mentoring and general guidance of best practices in order to develop world class software development teams
- Be responsible for creative and encouraging a positive working environment for employees from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences
- Prepare and present strategies to CTO for consideration and approval
- Pre-emptive and proactive performance investigation and tuning
- Proactive advice on code-refactoring to reduce complexity and increase supportability
- Fully knows the department domain and the keys parts within it; able to identify areas where historic choices are now a hinderance
- Technical debt ownership, management and reporting
- Instigate and host communities of practice (Internal and External)
Skills and Experience
Candidates should ideally have extensive previous commercial experience working in a back-end developer / full-stack role or environment.
Bauer Media Audio Services are historically a PHP shop (Vanilla, Laravel, Slim) but are well on the way to shifting to Typescript (NestJS) for our backend API’s.
Our API’s are consumed by internal and external clients, maintaining backwards compatibility within them is an important aspect of the craft.
This role is less about the technologies involved but more about the skills and traits of the individual, we are looking for a candidate with:

- Creating, maintaining and assisting other to generate automated tests
- Security and how to test, guard and mitigate – e.g, Cross Site Scripting, CORS, Cross Site Request Forgery, OWASP top 10
- Red-Team / Blue-Team security practice ready
- Pair Programming as navigator
- Able to identify when team members are struggling technically and provide help, assistance, training and support to get them through it
- Contribute to open-source projects
- Working knowledge and experience with the application of mathematical concepts, advanced analytics and data science is an added bonus
