Airbus Helicopters is the world’s largest helicopter manufacturer and the company’s site at Oxford Airport is Britain’s civil helicopter hub.

AHUK offers considerable experience in helicopter sales, bespoke completions, maintenance and spares support. Its in-house engineering capabilities include design, customisation, installation, flight-testing and certification, as well as technical support, maintenance, training and the supply of spares for civil and military applications.

AHUK is the MoD’s chosen provider of helicopters and maintenance for its Defence Helicopter Flying school (referred to as MFTS) located in RAF Shawbury (Shropshire) and RAF Valley (Anglesey).

Description/Overall purpose of the Job

We are seeking four Aircraft Engineering Apprentices to join Airbus Helicopters Ltd based at London Oxford Airport in Kidlington, Oxfordshire with a target start date of September 2023. Of the four posts available there are two vacancies for B1.3 Mechanical Apprentices and two vacancies for B2 Avionic Apprentices. Each apprentice will report to The Maintenance Operations Manager, Installation & Production Manager and Training Manager. The purpose of the AIRBUS Helicopters UK Ltd (AHUK) aircraft engineering apprenticeship is to provide apprentices with the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience, to prepare them for a career in aviation, as licensed aircraft engineers.

Qualifications you will gain

  • L2 and 3 Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering and a CAT A licence.

  • L4 Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering and a CAT B1.3 (Mechanical) or B2 licence (Avionics).


Main responsibilities

  • Studying and completing CAA Part 66 aviation engineering module examinations and aviation engineering practical tasks of the apprenticeship standard on time. This will involve residential stays with our training provider located at Kemble Airfield and during normal working hours at Kidlington.

  • Developing (under supervision) Avionic/Mechanical helicopter maintenance and rectification knowledge, skills and safe systems of work. Recording, collating evidence of maintenance and rectification activities suitable for the engineering apprenticeship standard.

  • Working at height, manual handling, handling substances hazardous to health and working in confined areas.

  • Required to assist in day to day running of the Hangars, including aircraft movement and general housekeeping responsibilities.

Selection Criteria

When assessing your CV, we look for English, Maths and Science (Physics); because these are the subjects that apprentices need to know, to be able to pass the Civil Aviation Authority exams. We have a simple formula: We scan the CV for GCSE results, but also look at anything more recent such as BTEC or A levels if applicable.

We look for the following grades in English, Maths and Science (Physics)

A Level results:

  • A level ‘A’ grade gets 12 points

  • A level ‘B’ grade gets 11 points

  • A level ‘C’ grade gets 9 points

GCSE results:

  • ‘A*’ or grade 9 gets 9 points,

  • grade 8 gets 8 points,

  • ‘A’ or grade 7 gets 7 points,

  • ‘B’ or grade 6 gets 6 points,

  • grade 5 gets 5 points,

  • ‘C’ or grade 4 gets 4 points,

Then we put the applications in score order, generally preferring an overall score of 18 or more.

Additional requirements:

  • Due to the nature of this position you will require GSAT training, DBS Security Clearance and be eligible for SC clearance.

  • Travel within the UK, travel to place of work (Kidlington) and residential stays to attend training with our training training provider at Kemble airfield.
