A GSK apprenticeship gives you the chance to earn while you learn. GSK Automation Engineering Degree Apprentice is a full-time programme that offers the opportunity to begin your career while studying towards an accredited degree in Engineering Automation. We are looking for motivated individuals with a willingness and enthusiasm to learn, who are excited to develop practical and problems solving skills. No prior experience is required as you will be given full training . This qualification is fully funded by GSK.

During the apprenticeship you will learn about:

  • Equipment automation
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Systems


As you develop your skills and knowledge you will provide support that keeps our pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment working efficiently as well as introducing innovative equipment and systems.

Education required:

  • English Language (not Literature) and Mathematics GCSE at grade 4/C or above
    and
  • 3 A Levels at Grades BCC (Including Maths and one of either Physics/Technology/Engineering Based subjects) or BTEC level 3 in Engineering DMM or above

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Salary: £18,000

Expected Start date: September 2023

Duration: 4 years

We are looking for motivated individuals who are willing and enthusiastic to learn whilst being excited to develop skills within Automation. No prior experience is required - you will be given full training.

Ahead together with tailored training and career development

As an Automation Engineering Degree Apprentice at GSK Ware, you will develop across 3 different disciplines

  • instrumentation, control & automation,
  • OT Cyber Security and
  • Data & Equipment Connectivity

Your academic study will major in one area but you will rotate across different disciplines at work. This will enable you to become a key member of our Automation engineering team - supporting and improving complex bespoke Automation systems as well as assisting in the introduction of new innovative systems.


You will also attend University on either a day release or block release basis.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will be supported by your line manager, an early talent programme manager and an apprentice buddy.

This Degree Apprenticeship is based at GSK’s flagship site in Ware, Hertfordshire (which has a large early talent population). The site manufactures lifesaving medications for respiratory, HIV and cancer. The site has invested heavily in industry 4.0 state of the art, bespoke equipment.

What will you do?

You will:

  • Develop Automation skills, including electrical, controls, instrumentation, Data and OT Cyber security.
  • Learn how to support and maintain existing Automation systems.
  • Help to support new equipment installations and upgrades
  • Experience the wide range of Automation roles and responsibilities.
  • Help to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Study towards your degree in Automation Engineering
