Front of House Audio Engineer
CSArts-SGV offers 10 different conservatory tracks of study within four schools of the arts:
Theatre, Dance, Music, and Fine Arts. Each Conservatory produces events as part of their curriculum, totaling over 60 events per academic year. The scope, scale, and unique needs of each production differ, and multiple projects occur simultaneously. The Front of House Audio
Engineer position is exclusively held by a professional rather than a student, though mentoring is still a significant portion of the job. The FOH Audio Engineer would work independently or with students, reporting to the Production Manager, to plan and execute the audio needs for all productions.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
● Design, plan, prepare audio systems for school events and performances based on the school production calendar and the discretion of the Production Manager.
● Lead students, assist with, or execute equipment set up, sound check, and running school events, performances, or recordings safely and on time.
● Edit, mix, and manipulate recorded and live sound. Fix and enhance sound at live events.
Resolve technical issues when they arise.
● Maintain equipment and manage inventory. Test and troubleshoot equipment regularly, and replace any faulty components or recommend replacements.
● Understand project goals and briefs and select the appropriate sound and mixing equipment for multiple projects.
● Communicate with clients and coordinate with other staff members to ensure deadlines are met and projects are completed to specifications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Two to four years professional experience working in an audio environment with at least one year of experience supervising crews.
● Practical experience with sound equipment and working as a sound engineer.
● Technical expertise in sound engineering techniques (e.g. equalization).
● Experience with sound editing and recording equipment (e.g. mixing consoles).
● Superb ear for sound.
● Ability to work evenings and weekends to support events.
● Possesses strong organizational and leadership skills, including the ability to meet schedules and timelines; maintain records and prepare reports; and work independently.
● Demonstrates attention to detail, creativity, and problem solving abilities.
● Demonstrates ability to handle multiple projects at once, to work under pressure, and stay calm when challenges arise.
● Demonstrates excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university program and two years of professional experience in an audio environment within the theater, performance, and live event industry.
OR
Five years professional experience in an audio environment within the theater, performance, and live event industry.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
School/theater environment; occasional irregular hours due to the demands of the position to meet the needs of the school’s performance schedule. Working with high school and middle school students.
COMPENSATION:
Work Year: Part-time, as needed per production schedule
Hourly Rate: $30
