The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint an Associate Professor in Space Heating and Cooling with effect from 3rd January 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be based in Holywell House (OX2 0ES) and will be offered a (non-tutorial) Fellowship at Wolfson College under arrangements described in the Job Description. The salary will be on a scale currently from £50,300 to £67,510 per annum plus additional benefits as indicated in the Job Description. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
This post is in association with the Zero-Carbon Energy Research Oxford (ZERO) Institute. A major global challenge for the next half century is to stop climate change. Over 70% of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change come from the conversion and use of energy. The transition to a zero-carbon energy system is therefore critical for climate change mitigation. To address this challenge, the ZERO Institute is bringing together leading academics and external organisations to tackle questions surrounding zero-carbon energy systems and their implementation.
The goal of ZERO is to accelerate the transition to a just, zero-carbon energy system. Achieving this requires systems thinking as well as the development and adoption of new technologies and infrastructure. In addition, innovation will be required in business models, institutions, policy and society.
This appointment will strengthen our research in Space Heating and Cooling and the post-holder will focus on zero carbon heating and cooling technologies, systems, energy materials (e.g. phase change materials) and/or urban and building system dynamics. They would work with a 3-year Research Fellowship in the Smith School, working on space cooling issues. Through this cross-departmental arrangement we will coordinate and expand existing activities in Engineering Science, ECI (Environmental Change Institute) and Smith School to develop a world leading focus in the largest energy consumption sector.
The successful candidate will conduct original research in the field of Space Heating and Cooling and will hold a doctorate in the general area of Thermo-fluids, Chemical Engineering or a cognate discipline. Candidates should have a proven research track record in the general field of space heating and cooling technologies and allied disciplines, witnessed by peer reviewed publications and collaborations. They will contribute to research in Thermo-fluids, Chemical engineering, supervise research students and research assistants, and obtain external funding to enable development of new and independent research. They will contribute to the teaching of core undergraduate courses in the Department of Engineering Science, which may include lectures, taught classes, practical laboratories, and the supervision of undergraduate design and project work.
