The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a flagship interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Exeter comprising Mathematicians, Physicists, Engineers, Biologists and Biomedical scientists. The ambition of the Institute is to decode the complexity of living systems across scales, from sub-molecular to cell populations, and from microbes to humans. Our shared mission is to discover, understand and control the fundamental rules of life.

The role

We seek to appoint an individual with a programme of exceptional research in mathematical and/or statistical modelling and analysis of living systems. This may include, but is not limited to, research that develops and applies high dimensional data investigation to understand the mechanisms underpinning phenomena in biological systems. Example approaches include topological data analysis, biophysical modelling, statistical techniques and machine learning techniques. The post-holder will actively engage in initiating and fostering collaborations across the range of biological systems and scales represented in the LSI.

The LSI is an interactive and collegiate research environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate how they can contribute to the vitality and success of the Institute. You will be key contributor to the development of the Mathematics of Life theme in the Institute, reaching across biological research areas.

The post will be based in the LSI and affiliated to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The post-holder will deepen research links between the Institute and the Department and will contribute to research-lead teaching in mathematics and/or statistics.

About you

Candidates will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Mathematics or an allied discipline and an independent, internationally recognised research programme in mathematical and statistical analyses applied to biological systems
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrated potential to attract such funding
  • A track record in high-quality peer-reviewed publications
  • Acollaborative approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality research training
  • A strong potential for research leadership

You will be welcomed into the vibrant LSI community of over 200 students, post-doctoral researchers and principal investigators from around the world working in superb laboratories and supported by excellent technical and professional services colleagues.

At Associate Professor level, you will lead an internationally established research group with competitive publications and research grant funding. You will participate in the development and implementation of the LSI research strategy and training and will lead collaborative bids for research funds.

At Professor level you will head an internationally renowned research group with a strong track record of research funding, a sustained output of international quality publications and successful trainees, and the drive to pursue new research directions. You will have a collaborative ethos and develop close interactions with experimentalists, acting as a mentor to other colleagues. Working with the LSI Leadership team you will help to drive the research agenda, attract high profile funding, and grow the global reputation of the Institute.
