Associate Director of Technical Accounting

Gilead Sciences is looking to hire a full-time Associate Director of Technical Accounting. This role is very dynamic in which the right candidate will be able to continue his/her growth and development by being exposed to and working as a key advisor on various complex transactions, and through developing working relationships with cross-functional partners including Treasury, Tax, FP&A, International Finance, Commercial, and others.
The Associate Director of Technical Accounting works with various levels of management and conducts/oversees technical research and accounting documentation over complex technical matters, including mergers and acquisitions, licensing and collaborations, financial due diligence, and revenue recognition.
Essential Functions
Act as Subject Matter Expert on US GAAP and accounting policy matters to various levels of management.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of accounting treatment of complex and highly judgmental areas, including analysis, relevant literature and conclusions.
  • Create and maintain accounting policies and drive the adoption of certain new standards • Key advisor in the operational side of complex areas (e.g., for the timely and accurate preparation of journal entries and financial reports in accordance with US GAAP).
  • Serve as the internal technical accounting resource to key business leaders throughout the Company during contract negotiation.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of SEC filings and other public disclosures related to material transactions.
  • Consistently maintains appropriate internal controls and upholds Company policies & procedures.
  • Interacts successfully with internal and external auditors and supports quarter end, interim and year-end audits by providing timely & accurate data and communication.
  • Evaluates processes and recommends & implements process improvements. • Develop and/or provide technical accounting trainings to various groups within the Company.
  • Participate in special projects, as required. Keys to success in this role include • Have an affinity for and experience with authoritative accounting literature and a desire to research deeply in order to solve technical issues.
  • Client service attitude, and the ability to become a trusted business partner to the cross functional teams
  • Well-organized, with experience successfully leading projects, and an established history as a planner that does not miss deadlines
  • Established history of strong written and verbal communication skills, with a strength for producing polished memos that are clear and concise.
  • Strong alignment with the mission and culture of the Company
  • Self-starter that is able to solve problems independently and works proactively to identify, advocate for and execute improvements
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
  • BA or BS degree in accounting or equivalent and 10+ years of relevant experience or a master’s degree with 8 years of relevant experience.
  • MBA/CPA/Chartered Accountant qualification is preferred.
  • Experience in biotech or pharmaceuticals industry a plus.
  • Experience in multi-national organization a plus.
  • In depth knowledge of US GAAP and general accounting policies and procedures required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft tools (Excel, Outlook, and Word) required.

The salary range for this position is: $172,890.00 - $223,740.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
