We are happy to invite applications for the post of Assistant Workshop Technician, working across the Faculty of Science (Department of Chemistry, the Department of Life Sciences, the Department of Computer Sciences and the Department of Physics).

About the role:

This hands-on and practical post is an exciting opportunity to support and enhancing world-class research and teaching. As part of our Technical Services team, you will work in our bespoke workshops, research labs, teaching facilities, plant rooms and communal facilities (such as greenhouses, fish facility, instrumentation spaces and environment-controlled rooms).

Core tasks will include providing an electrical and mechanical-focused service as well as construction and/or modification of specialised items for teaching and research.

About you:

Our ideal candidate will be:

  • Competent and confident in the use of a wide range of hand-held workshop tools
  • Practiced and skilled in the safe use of larger workshop equipment, including pillar drills, bandsaws, routers lathes and milling machines
  • Able to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions
  • Able to work from in house or manufacturer technical drawings/ instructions
  • Self-motivated, with experience working effectively without supervision
  • Able to fault find and trouble shoot on a wide range of scientific equipment
  • Aware of health and safety in a science/ workshop setting

Candidates with electrical, mechanical and general workshop experience are encouraged to apply. Flexibility, great communication and attention to detail are crucial for this hands-on and active post.
