The Opportunity:
This is a great opportunity to join our Underwriting Operations Support Team in Stafford. Working alongside a friendly and supportive team as an Assistant Underwriter, you will underwrite and develop our Property & Package account, underwriting business in accordance with QBE’s business plan, whilst providing support on a technical and administrative level. You will support our underwriting function dealing with new business and renewals along with providing excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
Core Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
  • Awareness and understanding of the annual business plan for the respective business unit
  • Participate in the review and analysis of the portfolio to identify progress towards business plan
  • Underwrite new and existing Property & Package products, with strong negotiation skills
  • Compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
  • Adherence to underwriting standards, instructions, and good practice to minimize risk and maximize efficiency in line with process control time frames
  • Contribution to the recording and measurement of insurance risks to ensure accuracy, good practice, and adherence to relevant performance standards
  • Support the development of cross class business opportunities
  • Positively promote the department, division, and company, to maximise brand leverage
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
  • Keep abreast of market dynamics and demonstrate market cycle awareness to be able to operate effectively
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensuring accurate underwriting data is captured on systems to minimize risk and ensure high quality output of information
  • Assisting with the production of management information statistics and reports to support the business planning process, through research and project work
To Succeed in the role, you will have:
  • Technical Property & Package underwriting experience with market awareness and broker development acumen
  • An understanding of the value of transacting business efficiently
  • Strong organisation and prioritisation skills with ability to work to deadlines
  • Exceptional service delivery with strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating the ability to establish and maintain business relationships
  • Problem solving skills – demonstrating tenacity in handling and resolving queries
  • A good level of numeracy and literacy with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Desire to gain knowledge and skills in an underwriting environment
Ideally, you will have:
  • Basic understanding of class specific underwriting knowledge
  • Some knowledge of insurance underwriting systems - experience of working on E-trade platforms would be advantageous
  • Intermediate level use of MS office applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other departmental software packages
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements
  • Flexible approach and ability to recognise and adapt to changing business requirements
  • GCSE/Standard Grade level or equivalent qualifications
  • Strong understanding of defined process standard
