About Us

Young Epilepsy is the children and young people’s epilepsy charity. Our purpose is to create a society in which children and young people with epilepsy are enabled to thrive and fulfil their potential. A society in which their voices are respected, and their ambitions realised.

We work with children and young people across the country, as well as many of those people and organisations who shape their lives - parents, health and care professionals, researchers, teachers, policymakers and more.

Informed by young people and drawing on our strong legacy of expertise in education, health

and research, we have developed and published our new 2020-2025 strategy. This focuses our work around 3 key offers: health and research, voice and support and St Piers special education. Within these key offers we aim to:

  • Coordinate research that improves diagnosis and treatments, and deliver cutting-edge health services
  • Campaign for children’s rights, supporting them in school and college and providing innovation tools, information, and practical help for living day-to-day life
  • Provide an innovative and creative environment for children and young people with epilepsy, autism, and severe learning difficulties.

About the Role

The Young Epilepsy Research Department is responsible for the governance and coordination of the projects under the Young Epilepsy Research programme, lead by the Prince of Wales’s Chair of Childhood Epilepsy.

This current role is part of the Turning6 Study team. The project involves following children with epilepsy in the south of England, whom we saw as babies, as they grow up to gain a unique understanding of the early onset epilepsies. Specifically, this role will lead the recruitment and participation of control families in the use of actigraphy to measure child sleep/activity.

The Assistant Research Psychologist will report to the Educational Psychologist and Research Coordinator who will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project.

The main duties of the Research Assistant include:

  • Support the coordinator in the setup of the sleep sub study
  • Contact and consent control participants
  • Manage the contact database for the control participants
  • Administer the actigraphy assessments with control participants
  • Data entry and maintenance of the project database, ensuring high record keeping standards
  • Undertake data analysis, and assist in the production of reports and summaries, using IT and statistical programmes.
  • Provide regular updates on the progress of the sub study to the Principal Investigator and the research team
  • Support with data collation
  • Prepare final report, analysing findings and conclusions from the research on physical activity in young people
