The Role
The assistant psychologist will collaborate with the director of care and other senior staff members of the home/school to provide high quality specialised clinical support to the children and young people in our care in order to enhance their psychological well-being. The assistant psychologist will also systematically support all involved in the care and education of the pupils by ensuring that a robust holistic care and education approach is taken that reflects the needs of individual pupils in order for them to achieve their full potential in area of their social, emotional, physical and educational development is provided and maintained at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- To participate in placement visit assessments to assist the team with identifying pupil’s suitability for admission into Witham Prospect School.
- With appropriate guidance and supervision, to undertake systematic neuropsychological assessments and other standard procedures, to analyse and evaluate the pupils’ psychological needs.
- To undertake direct observations and utilise assessments as required.
- To seek and acquire specific information by reading medical notes, investigating histories of the pupil’s needs in order to contribute effectively to behaviour management treatment plans.
- To run individual/ group therapeutic sessions where treatment plans are devised and monitored by a Psychologist.
- To systematically monitor and assess the progress of the interventions in a young person’s Positive Behaviour Support Plan – this will also include reviewing data monthly and supporting with any amendments to the PBS plan and/or associated risk assessments.
- To support with audits across the home and school environments and complete any actions assigned to the therapy team.
- To complete relevant sections for annual review reports across the home and school environment
- To support in developing pupils social/emotional skills (depending on individual needs) enabling them to self-regulate.
- With appropriate supervision to formulate psychological treatment and/or management of the children and young people’s needs.
- Take responsibility in supporting pupils and staff to develop calming/coping strategies, which are appropriate to the individual.
- With support from the Education and Care leads, to support in the management of positive behaviour support by ensuring that approved approaches as defined in individual pupil behaviour plans and Sherwood training as required are followed.
- Liaise and work alongside any external professionals who are responsible for ensuring that our pupil’s health, welfare, social, emotional, educational and physical needs are met.
- Review and evaluate own practice methods constantly to see if pupil’s individual treatment and developmental needs are being met.
Essential Criteria
- A degree in Psychology recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS)
- A sound knowledge of psychological theory and able to apply variety of behaviour management programmes tailored to meet the needs of individual pupils.
- A good understanding of Positive Behaviour Support and how it is utilised to support students with behaviours that an be challenging to support.
- Proven experience and knowledge of working with children and young people with special educational needs, with particular reference to pupils with severe learning disabilities and complex needs.
- A positive, proactive “can do” approach combined with the resilience to retain a sense of perspective whilst working under pressure.
- Effective communication and motivation skills.

About Witham Prospect School
Witham Prospect School is a newly established independent specialist residential care and education organisation that has been created to meet the needs of children and young people aged between 11 and 19 years who have severe and profound learning disabilities and who may also be on the autism spectrum, have complex care needs and behavioural concerns. We are situated on the outskirts of Norton Disney in Lincolnshire.
