Job description
Permanent, full-time position.
The School of Engineering is a vibrant and innovative department within the University of Warwick, providing high-quality research, education and knowledge transfer in engineering and technology. We are currently establishing the Humans & Structures research section that addresses the research challenge of increased sensitivity of civil engineering structures to dynamic excitation, with particular emphasis on dynamic loading by humans. Main drivers behind the research are the need for more sustainable (minimum material use) structures and fast urbanisation of already densely populated cities whereby vibration sources are omnipresent and increasingly complex. The section is led by Stana Zivanovic, a recently appointed Professor of Human-Structure Dynamics. The section’s research aims to act as an enabler of human-centred design of built infrastructure. We are recruiting an Assistant Professor who has research expertise within the stated research remit and is passionate about contributing to realising this aim.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to join the Civil and Environmental Engineering stream, who will be required to carry out innovative research of international excellence and to teach on our taught programmes. As part of your five-year probation period there is a reduced teaching and administration load to establish your research, with a full load in year 5. Successful completion of the probation will coincide with promotion to Associate Professor.
You will have research experience in the area of human interaction with civil engineering structures. This could include, but is not limited to, modelling dynamic actions by humans, evaluating effects of vibrations on people, and investigating correlation between vibration serviceability and sustainability. You will have a PhD degree in biomechanics, civil/structural engineering or any related field, with strong emphasis on applying your research findings in civil engineering context. You will be capable of establishing a personal research portfolio of internationally-leading quality. You will initiate, develop and deliver high quality research, publish the findings, and demonstrate the impact of your research. You will carry out collaborative research activities with other disciplines within Warwick and outside, and with industrial partners.
You will have the relevant skills needed to deliver teaching of the highest quality. You will engage with higher education pedagogy and be willing to develop novel teaching methods, embracing changes in teaching technology and expectations. You will teach on the range of taught programmes at undergraduate, specialised masters and continuing professional development levels.
All applicants must include both a Curriculum Vitae and a two-page outline of their plans and intentions for research activities and grant capture over five years. This bespoke plan will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership. This is a mandatory component of our selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.
Applications from candidates in groups under-represented in the Engineering sector are particularly welcome.
The University aims to promote work life balance for all employees and the School of Engineering will consider a range of possible flexible working arrangements in order to recruit the best candidate.
For an informal discussion please contact Professor S. Zivanovic at the email address: [email protected].
Interview Date: TBC.
