STV has a unique and exciting opportunity for an assistant producer to join its Scotland Tonight team based in Glasgow on a permanent basis.
The assistant producer will work closely with the producer to help define an agenda for Scotland Tonight that is compelling, relevant and distinct. From interviews with key voices to pictures of incredible moments, this role is focused on developing and sourcing content that really connects with audiences.
The successful candidate will be a versatile journalist with a keen eye for content that will work on broadcast, online and social platforms while maintaining the trusted reputation of Scotland Tonight. The role requires a good understanding of the key issues facing Scotland and the ability to transform often complex material into engaging storytelling.
This is a rare opportunity to join the team working on Scotland’s leading current affairs programme and to help shape its output to reflect the challenges and opportunities facing the country in these unprecedented times.
The role
- Work closely with producers, multi-media journalists and output editors to develop compelling stories for use on Scotland Tonight.
- Deliver engaging content in multiple formats to standards and styles agreed with producers and output editors
- Participate in forward planning to help ensure an appropriate mix of diary and off-diary stories are available across our platforms
- Develop and maintain a strong contacts base across a range of sectors to quickly source information, confirmations and contributions
- Prepare tailored research briefs ahead of interviews and discussions
- Deputise / output produce from time to time
- Develop and maintain desktop editing skills
Skills and experience
- A highly developed news sense with experience of major breaking news stories, the development of original news features and a track record of agenda setting journalism
- Detailed knowledge of the Scottish news, current affairs and social trends
- Solid understanding of what audiences want from news on digital and broadcast channels
- Sound editorial judgement and a command of the legal, ethical and regulatory considerations of news
- Experience of video editing including Avid is preferred but not essential
- Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and quickly in challenging and rapidly changing circumstances
- Calm under pressure with strong influencing and negotiating skills
- Evidence of creative thinking and innovative ideas for improving our current affairs output and serving our audiences
- Determination to get things done
- This role will mainly involve working backshifts aligned to programming requirements.
