Job description

Fixed term contract until 31st August 2023

Based in Covent Garden, London

Full time; 42.5 hours per week

£44,977.92 per annum

The Royal Opera House aims to enrich people`s lives through opera and ballet. It seeks to be accessible and engaging, to develop audiences across the UK and to break new ground in the presentation of lyric theatre. Our Technical, Production and Costume Department plays a leading part in ensuring our performances are of the highest quality by delivering technical excellence for every performance, rehearsal, and event.

The Royal Opera House Wigs and Make-up team offer a professional, high-level service to the ROH performing companies across Opera and Ballet, working closely with Designers, Directors, and Production teams to realise and execute their creative vision.

This is an exciting new contract and an opportunity to join the department and support the Senior Manager and Manager at an incredibly busy time, working alongside 2 other Assistant Managers in a large team, providing day to day leadership and guidance for the Technicians (both contracted and casual) working across Opera and Ballet performance.

This role will suit a candidate who has a strong, collaborative approach to working, understands the challenges of working in a busy performance environment and can keep a cool head under pressure, with the ability to problem solve and think outside of the box.

Can you demonstrate any of the following:

  • A proven track record in performance-related Wig and Make-up work for live theatre
  • An excellent background in all wig and make-up preparation techniques including the ability to make wigs and facials
  • Proven ability to realise make-up looks from an existing design, awareness of hair types and the latest hair and wig styling techniques and products, creating historical period styles, wig fittings, and carrying out routine alterations and re-fronting
  • Demonstrable experience in running performances and providing excellent levels of customer care, ideally for a large-scale theatre
  • A proven aptitude for offering guidance, support and training in all basic wig and make-up techniques to other staff and apprentices.

Please note, although previous experience with Opera/Ballet will be highly regarded, it is not essential. We welcome applications from qualified candidates with a broader theatre background and would like to hear what you can bring to our organisation.

The Royal Opera House is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which everyone can thrive. We particularly welcome applications from those who are from a global majority background and/or those who are disabled, as they are under-represented within our organisation. As a Disability Confident Employer, we guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential minimum criteria for our vacancies.
