Main Purpose

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the
422 Civil Engineering Squadron Croughton, United Kingdom.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Assistant Chief for Health and Safety responsible for

developing and managing a comprehensive Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program of
a sufficient magnitude for all functional areas of the base Fire Emergency Services Flight, and to provide
consultation, direction and guidance regarding all aspects of Fire Department Occupational Health and
Safety, while preventing or reducing injury and loss of life, and minimize damage to property and the

environment. Objectives: Prevent fires or minimize their consequences and minimize the adverse
consequences of emergency incidents.

Knowledge and Experience Required
Applicants must demonstrate the following:

1. Know ledge of occ u pational safety and health manag ement system s, p rinc iples, tec hniques , la ws, codes, a nd st anda rd s ap plicab le to th e fire s ervice; occupational health and safety hazards related to non-emergency operations; current health maintenance and physical fitness issues that affect fire service members.
2. Knowledge of safety and health hazards associated with emergency operations; building construction; fire science and behavior relative to predicting dangerous fire ground environments; personnel accountability systems; incident scene rehabilitation strategies; and the ability to manage incident scene safety per organizational policies and national consensus standards.
3. Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
4. Knowledge of the theory, principles, methods, techniques, and practices of firefighting and rescue operations.
5. Knowledge of the operation of fire department communications equipment.
6. Ability to operate and direct others in operating under stressful and dangerous conditions.
7. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
8. Ability to track trends and practices to identify and reduce hazardous conditions and procedures.

  • Hours of work: Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization’s flexible working policies.
  • Will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • May be assigned other duties that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the employee.
  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training. Position may be coded as mission essential.
  • A 6–12-month probationary period will be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary train.

Other significant facts pertaining to this position are:

  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. Duties may require wear of firefighting personal protective equipment with Self

Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and entering environments designated as immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).

  • This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TOP) under the Air Force civilian drug-testing program. As a mandatory requirement for employment in the TDP, the incumbent is to (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and

(b) if required, submit to urinalysis testing. The selectee must sign statements acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP.

  • The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as a Fire Officer III (includes Fire

Officer I, II), Fire Instructor II (includes Fire Instructor I), Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I), Hazardous Materials(HAZMAT) Incident Commander, HAZMAT Operations with Mission Specific Competencies Personal Protective Equipment andProduct Control (includes HAZMAT Awareness), Airport Fire Fighter (includes Firefighter I, II}, and National IncidentManagement 100,200,300,400, 700, 800 (or Air Force approved equivalent).

  • Subject to recall in the event of real fire/disaster emergencies. incumbent may also be required to take part in test alerts and practice readiness exercises.
  • Required to participate in a physical fitness program and pass an annual physical.
  • demands include heavy lifting, walking, crawling, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, climbing, and is required to maintain physical fitness requirements necessary to perform the job.
  • Work environment may include outside work and inside work, excessive heat and cold, dust, smoke, water, fumes, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, above or below ground, and irregular hours of work, i.e., day and or night.
  • The incumbent must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System as a Fire Department Health and Safety Officer and

Incident Office within one year.

  • There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire program.
