Assistant General Counsel Global Health

Location: GSK House, London or Wavre, Belgium

This role leads legal support to the GSK Global Health organization.


GSK Global Health aims to reduce global health inequalities by changing the trajectory of high burden infectious diseases that disproportionately affect underserved people in lower-income countries, including malaria, TB, anti-microbial resistance and neglected tropical diseases.


The holder of this role will provide expert legal advice on a range of activities covering the funding, research, development, manufacturing, supply and sale of pharmaceutical products and vaccines to address public health needs of the Developing World. Strategic thinking is essential, as is strong judgment, a sense of diplomacy, the ability to work collaboratively and a strong work ethic. This position has a significant role to play in helping GSK meet its ambition to positively impact the lives of 2.5 billion people in the next 10 years. You will be energized by working in a global health context, and skilled at operating in an evolving and highly matrixed environment. It is a role with a high degree of autonomy and high expectations of performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountable for leading the management and mitigation of legal risk arising from the activities of GSK Global Health globally
  • Member of the GSK Global Health Leadership Team, and other governance structures as assigned
  • Develop and influence GSK Global Health strategies and activities using sophisticated strategic thinking alongside deep knowledge of the company’s objectives, external laws, regulations and applicable regulatory practices
  • Lead Legal support for GSK Global Health projects including:
    • licensing and collaboration agreements
    • supply, funding, procurement and other contractual arrangements with multi-national organisations and key strategic partners such as Gates Foundation, Unicef, GAVI, MSF, Save the Children, Amref, WHO
    • pandemic and pandemic preparedness activities
  • Manage disputes, litigation and complaints implicating GSK Global Health globally
  • Accountable for selection and management of external legal counsel in allocated areas of responsibility
  • Partner with GSK Compliance to support the business in taking its accountability for effective risk management in all business activities

We are looking for professionals with these skills to achieve our goals:

  • This role is a leadership role requiring experience and gravitas to advise senior leaders on key legal risks impacting GSK Global Health, particularly in the R&D, transactions and commercial arenas
  • Must be capable of developing a very good understanding of the actors, trends and economics supporting the Global Health agenda
  • Broad array of legal expertise including a solid understanding of the following areas of law: commercial, contract, competition, data protection, litigation, intellectual property, regulatory, corporate governance, and the regulations applicable to the research, development, manufacture and supply of medicinal products
  • Ability to work and navigate in a highly matrixed organisation (often needing to exert significant influence without direct authority)
  • Experience of drafting and advising on R&D licensing and other business development transactions in the life sciences / healthcare sector
  • Ability to engage stakeholders proactively, with strong business partnering capabilities
  • Ability to assess and manage competing business priorities (both within team and across different teams) to manage workload appropriately.
  • Excellent drafting, communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to translate complex technical legal issues into plain English


Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Scientific background and/or experience in the research and development of vaccines and pharmaceuticals
  • Experience supporting R&D business operations
