Team/Function Overview:
The Assistant General Counsel is a senior level legal position responsible for accomplishing results and helping our businesses and functions achieve their goals through the delivery of legal support, advice and guidance across a broad range of assigned practice areas within the Commercial / Enterprise Operations & Technology (EO&T) Legal Team (the “Team”), which is part of the broader IP and O&T Law Group for the EMEA region in Citi’s Legal Department.
This dynamic and supportive Team of lawyers provide a wide range of commercial legal advice in support of the EMEA Sourcing Team (procurement contract managers) in connection with third party supplier and outsourcing contracts for a wide spectrum of goods and services across Citi business and function areas as well as offering tech, commercial and associated legal support for other related senior projects and key regulatory matters.

This role is suited to a proactive self-starter and an adaptable individual who thrives on the challenges of a broad and very busy senior commercial lawyer role.
The successful lawyer will:-
Oversee assigned legal activities in the Team, which provides legal counsel and support in relation to a broad range of commercial contracts (across different subject matter areas), complex outsourcing negotiations, technology law, data protection law and applicable regulation impacting the O&T sphere (e.g. Operational Resilience and third party management requirements).
Assume responsibility as a lead senior lawyer for strategic, often time sensitive, projects across different Citi business (and legal practice) areas.
Resolve complex legal issues and devise the legal strategy on live matters, whilst inspiring confidence from others to obtain backing for your vision. Ensure smooth roll out and handle escalations from colleagues.
Represent the Legal team on senior forums and committees as required. Handle scrutiny and questions from senior managers, whilst confidently delivering the legal message.
Act as a legal subject matter expert on an individual basis, as well as when partnering with other regional and country legal colleagues across the globe on multi-jurisdictional deals requiring local implementation.
Demonstrate a willingness to upskill into new and emerging practice areas and take ownership to ensure legal service is delivered.
Partner with business / functional line management on assigned matters and effectively manage relationships with your internal stakeholders and clients.
Appropriately assess legal risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervising the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
Coordinate capacity to meet business needs and ensure efficient delivery of legal services as part of a busy senior role.

Qualifications and Skills required
Banking/financial industry experience or experience working with a law firm or in-house legal function is beneficial.
An understanding of applicable EU and UK legal and regulatory obligations applicable to the financial services sector in the context of general commercial contracting and processes (an in-depth working knowledge of UK and EU Data Protection law and regulatory outsourcing requirements is particularly useful).
Proven analytical and organizational skills. Ability to sense and manage the emergence of risk and navigate stakeholders through that is key.
Consistently demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication.
Strong technical legal drafting skills and ability to juggle complex negotiations required.

Bachelor's degree / Law degree
Qualified lawyer admitted to practice in the UK
