We are the only global investment bank operating in Northern Ireland. Every day, our local experts interact with global teams in over 100 countries developing and supporting next-generation technology solutions for the enterprise and delivering critical services to the bank and its customers, to make sure we are a stronger and safer organization for our clients.

You will have a truly global reach, which will provide you with new experiences and development opportunities right here in Belfast’s iconic Titanic Quarter.

Team/Function Overview:

The Assistant General Counsel is a senior level legal position responsible for accomplishing results and helping our businesses and functions achieve their goals through the delivery of legal support, advice and guidance across a broad range of assigned practice areas within the Commercial / Enterprise Operations & Technology (EO&T) Legal Team (the “Team”), which is part of the broader IP and O&T Law Group for the EMEA region in Citi’s Legal Department.

This dynamic and supportive Team of lawyers provide a wide range of commercial legal advice in support of the EMEA Sourcing Team (procurement contract managers) in connection with third party supplier and outsourcing contracts for a wide spectrum of goods and services across Citi business and function areas as well as offering tech, commercial and associated legal support for other related senior projects and key regulatory matters.

This is a rare opportunity to join an in-house legal team in the financial services sector who work on exciting and varied projects across a broad array of legal areas, from tech law to property, and with impact across the only global investment bank operating in Northern Ireland.

Role / Position Overview:

Do you want to join a talented and collaborative group of lawyers who work on interesting legal matters and are part of a large global in-house Legal team? Bring your talent here! We can’t wait to have you on board as part of our team.

This role is suited to a proactive self-starter and an adaptable individual who thrives on the challenges of a broad and very busy senior commercial lawyer role.

The successful lawyer will:-

  • Oversee assigned legal activities in the Team, which provides legal counsel and support in relation to a broad range of commercial contracts (across different subject matter areas), complex outsourcing negotiations, technology law, data protection law and applicable regulation impacting the O&T sphere (e.g. Operational Resilience and third party management requirements).

  • Assume responsibility as a lead senior lawyer for strategic, often time sensitive, projects across different Citi business (and legal practice) areas.

  • Resolve complex legal issues and devise the legal strategy on live matters, whilst inspiring confidence from others to obtain backing for your vision. Ensure smooth roll out and handle escalations from colleagues.

  • Represent the Legal team on senior forums and committees as required. Handle scrutiny and questions from senior managers, whilst confidently delivering the legal message.

  • Act as a legal subject matter expert on an individual basis, as well as when partnering with other regional and country legal colleagues across the globe on multi-jurisdictional deals requiring local implementation.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to upskill into new and emerging practice areas and take ownership to ensure legal service is delivered.

  • Partner with business / functional line management on assigned matters and effectively manage relationships with your internal stakeholders and clients.

  • Appropriately assess legal risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervising the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

  • Coordinate capacity to meet business needs and ensure efficient delivery of legal services as part of a busy senior role.

Development Value:

This is an exciting role and will provide the successful candidate with exposure to a wide variety of legal issues and practice areas, whilst offering an insight into businesses and functions right across the Bank and providing legal assistance to them on stimulating and rewarding projects. You will join a Team that is innovative, solution focused and offers a collaborative, welcoming and friendly environment to work in, as part of a large in-house Legal function with a broad network of fellow lawyers across the globe.
