About the role
The Assistant Financial Accountant will work with the Senior Financial Accountant to ensure all income and expenditure is accounted for accurately in accordance with Financial Regulations, University Policies, HM Revenue and Customs and conditions set by funding authorities. Completion of statutory returns in accordance with agreed deadline including all University and subsidiary VAT and Corporation Tax returns.
Ideally, but not essential, you must have or be studying for an accounting professional qualification – AAT/ACCA/CIMA/FCA. You will be highly numerate and proficient in standard software packages, particularly Excel. You must be able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, whilst paying attention to detail and achieving high levels of accuracy.
Main Responsibilities
As the deputy to the Senior Financial Accountant, the roles main responsibilities are:
- Administering, maintaining and reconciling the Fixed Assets register, processing fixed asset additions, disposals and running depreciation.
- Receiving and checking payroll data from the payroll team ensuring correct accounting treatment of payment types.
- Investigating, resolving and referring discrepancies as appropriate and prepare payment analysis to HM Revenue, Department of Social Security, and Department for Education, Staffordshire County Council and Teachers Pension.
- Administering the University’s banking arrangements including investments and loans, keeping all files, including signatory lists and other administrative details up to date.
- Reconciliation of Balance Sheet Accounts while supporting the year-end closedown of accounts, providing clear working papers and assistance with audit queries.
- Undertaking regular bank reconciliations including ensuring all transactions are accurately identified and allocated in a timely manner.
- Assisting with the accounting activities of companies and funds associated with Staffordshire University subsidiaries.
- Preparing and filing all University and subsidiary corporation tax and VAT returns.
- Maintenance of contracts/operating and finance lease registers and undertake regular checks to ensure correct accounting treatment.
- Assisting with the administration of University’s insurance claims and processes.
