Job description
The Today Programme and PM audiences look to us to engage them with the most important stories in the UK and around the world, through the strength of our journalism, the creativity of our storytelling, and the excellence of our output. The Assistant Editor will have responsibility for Across the UK Outside Broadcasts (OBs), reporting to the Editors of the programmes, and managing the team working on the OBs. The programmes will together broadcast three OBs each week – two on Today and one on PM. This is a key role in the team responsible for this output, which is a cornerstone of the BBC’s commitment to reporting from Across the UK.
This role will require regular travel across the UK, working in at least one location each week, and often more than one.

Main ResponsibilitiesYou will lead the OB team and output edit live news programmes in a fast-changing environment, driving the editorial and journalistic shape of the programmes to create engaging and newsmaking programmes for a Radio 4 Audience, reflecting the news agenda Across the UK.
Are you the right candidate?We are looking for an Assistant Editor with significant experience leading teams (inc. presenting staff) who demonstrates the ability to get the best out of everyone; encouraging development and not being afraid to have open and honest performance management conversations.
You should have experience of output editing engaging live-radio programmes, for a demanding audience in a fast-paced and pressured environment. You should demonstrate clear news judgement and a commitment to increasing diverse representation across output. As part of your experience, you will be comfortable managing breaking news in a live broadcast setting.
We want to ensure that our content reaches as many people as possible and you should be able to demonstrate your experience in increasing reach both through live programmes and through digital treatments, working collaboratively across the BBC. You will also evidence strong experience of being able to develop a core strategy for a programme brand to deliver on its editorial priorities
Creativity is essential and you will have a genuine enthusiasm for local stories which will be of interest to a UK national audience and the proven ability to think of creative ways of illustrating national stories through a local lens. You will need a proven ability to originate relevant content, for a national audience in news or current affairs. Candidates should have a strong knowledge of the domestic news agenda and in-depth knowledge of politics.
