Job description
Role: Assistant Ecologist
Location: Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Newcastle
Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is a collective of designers, advisors and experts working globally. Founded to be humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology, and rigour to shape a better world. You will work within a growing regional team with diverse backgrounds in environment, ecology, landscape, water, air quality, climate and more in the vanguard of sustainable development and transformational change. The team delivers a varied and impactful portfolio of projects in many market sectors including energy, water, cities, transport and property.
Why Arup?
Don’t take our word for it, here’s what some of our people have to say…
The opportunity:
Preparing reports including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and protected species reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) and Habitats Regulations Assessments/Appraisals (HRA). Undertaking peer reviews of reports (Quality Assurance) including site visits and surveys. Project management (including budget management) of small and medium sized ecological projects, or managing the ecological aspects of larger multi-disciplinary projects.
Providing sound ecological technical knowledge into projects and EIAs, including for major infrastructure projects. Coordinating survey teams of Arup ecologists and sub-contractors, and preparing sub-consultancy agreements with the preparation and review of small to medium size bids and tenders. Advising clients on the ecological implications of the development planning systems in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Advising clients on how to maximise biodiversity value of their developments, and minimise their consenting risk.
Working on a varied mix of cutting-edge renewable energy projects, urban developments, and infrastructure (rail, drainage, road) projects. Supporting the delivery of natural capital assessments and working alongside other disciplines, such as our Natural Flood Management colleagues, to apply biodiversity to deliver climate resilient solutions whilst conducting site visits and surveys
The team:
Our northern team of ecologists sits within the wider national network of over 60 ecologists, and portfolio of over 450 environmental professionals globally. We work at scales ranging across national, sectoral, city, organisation, programme and asset levels, helping clients manage the risks and opportunities in the environment.
Having our North ecology team split across four offices (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle), means teamwork is critical, and you will also work closely with colleagues from North West and Yorkshire (Leeds, York and Manchester). The individual must be able to demonstrate their commitment to teamwork. Whilst based in one of four northern offices, the successful candidate must expect to work at times in any of the Arup offices to support projects based there, as required.
Is the role right for you?
Skills / Experience required for the role:
Potential candidates are likely to demonstrate ecological experience, with a commitment to sustainable development. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Post-graduate consultancy experience and good background in ecological surveying
- Excellent report writing skills, including experience of PEA and protected species reports, and ideally EcIA and HRA
- Ability to present and manipulate data in GIS (an understanding of other digital data capture and the ability to analyse it would be beneficial) and experience of practical application of accreditations such as Building With Nature would be beneficial but not essential
- Project management experience, ideally including application of QA procedures and financial systems, underpinned by excellent planning, organisational, time management skills
- Experience or an awareness of Natural Capital assessments, nature based solutions, ecosystem services, regenerative land management and nature recovery principles.
Qualifications:
- Degree in a relevant subject to do with the environment
