Job description
The Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (MAA) is hiring an Assistant Coordinator for the second phase of the MAA Stores Move project, starting from September 2023. As part of a dynamic and busy team, the role will work closely with the Collections Team Coordinator and Project Administrator, and a team of 14 Collections Assistants and 2 Workshop Technicians to deliver the processing, documentation, photography, packing and transport of 300,000 collections currently housed in off-site stores to a new facility: the Centre for Material Culture (CMC).
This is a rare opportunity to be involved in a store move of this type and scale. Our goal is to ensure that the collections are both appropriately stored and made physically and intellectually accessible: to researchers, students, stakeholders and audiences in Cambridge and worldwide, through visits to the new store and online through MAA's catalogue.
This role will involve assistance with preparing museum collections prior to processing and moving to the new store, assistance with delivering training to Collections Assistants and quality control, and with project monitoring. With the Collections Team Coordinator and MAA Collections Managers, the post holder will contribute to planning and delivery of moves to the CMC, and maintain contact with contractors. The role will be responsible for stock control of materials and consumables and requests for procurement, as well as deputising for the Collections Team Coordinator when required. You will have an interest in museums and collections, with an appreciation of issues of cultural sensitivities related to artefacts in museums like MAA, good oral and written communication skills and excellent attention to detail.
The MAA Stores Move Project is an intensive project with challenging objectives, and team cohesion in a respectful working environment is a priority. MAA and the University of Cambridge Museums are committed to inclusion and diversity within our institutions and across the sector, and we particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within the Museum and the University
This is a full-time post to start as soon as possible, and no later than 1st September 2023, until the project end date of 31st January 2025.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records) check, a health assessment and a security check.
