About the role:
The post holder will be responsible for the packing, movement and storage of objects as part of a major storage move project, with a particular focus on archaeology.
This role is primarily technical. Problem solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential.
The post-holder will be expected to work at the Museum’s off-site store at Blythe Road, Hammersmith. There may also be occasional work at the main Museum site at Bloomsbury.
Key areas of responsibility:
- To facilitate the movement, packing and rehousing of archaeological assemblages across the collections
- To observe best practice in all aspects of object handling and collections storage
- To monitor security of objects and to maintain them in good condition in storage and in transit
- To maintain and update essential object documentation, including location information and photography
- To follow Integrated Pest Management procedures
- To assist with training and skill-sharing as required, including supervision of volunteers as required
About you:
- Working effectively as part of a team is essential, but strong self-motivation is also required for the accomplishment of tasks that can be repetitive.
- Working flexibly, including some out of hours working.
- Following best practice and being proficient in basic handling and storage requirements that apply to different groups of materials and objects.
- Ensuring accurate tracking and other basic documentation relating to collections management.
- Maintaining a calm, approachable and professional manner in busy and demanding environments.
- Manual dexterity and a degree of physical fitness are desirable to meet an occasionally physically demanding role, with some heavy lifting.
