Job description

The role

The University of Bristol is one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK and our workforce puts us in the top 3 largest employers in Bristol. Within the University, Finance Services is one of the biggest Professional Services Divisions, the Post Award Team sits within the Research Centre of Excellence.

The purpose of the Assistant Accountant role is to deliver strategic financial advice and support to Schools and Divisions in relation to post award management of research grants and other funding streams. This includes the provision of accounting, financial management and financial reporting services and ensuring compliance with funder terms and conditions.

The University is currently offering hybrid working which means you will get more flexibility around working arrangements. Currently you would need to come into the office a minimum of once a week. You will have the opportunity to work in the office on additional days of the week if you choose, but the current arrangement offers excellent flexibility for staff.

What will you be doing?

In this role, you will be required to take a customer focussed approach to the provision of financial information and analysis and act as first line support for colleagues in Schools who require assistance in relation to financial matters.

You will be responsible for a portfolio of research grants and one of your main tasks will be to ensure that all income and expenditure for each grant is maximised as per the funders’ rules. You will need to produce financial reports during and at the end of the grant term and will need to provide routine, customised reports for academic colleagues.

Other standard tasks include invoicing, approving expenditure on our finance system, MyERP and ensuring indirect costs have been correctly calculated.

You should apply if

  • You have an aptitude for working in a financial environment, with strong Excel skills. An ability to prioritise workloads and tasks effectively is essential.
  • You have the ability and willingness to learn new procedures and ideas quickly.
  • You are highly organised and able to work to strict deadlines while maintaining excellent written and verbal communication skills.
