The Role
The Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre North East (DER-IC NE) is one of 4 state-of-the-art centres in a UK-wide initiative to support UK power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) supply chain. Based in Washington, Sunderland, and managed by Newcastle University, DER-IC NE focuses on the assembly, manufacture and test of electrical machines and power electronic drives – technologies that underpin the world shift towards ‘Zero Carbon’.

Assembling the very first batches of new electrical machines (motors and generators), using new, innovative and untested manufacturing processes, you will work with Process Engineers to develop manufacturing processes and operator instructions, prior to full-scale manufacturing.
We are looking for someone who can take a leading role n the manufacture and assembly of electrical machines using cutting-edge industrial manufacturing equipment, including collaborative robots (‘cobots’), bespoke electric motor and generator manufacturing and assembly machines, and end of line testing. The role offers excellent opportunities to train and learn new skills, and is suited to candidates who may have experience as a technical operator, production technician, CNC operator, or other similar role gained from production environments in a wide range of industries.
To be successful in this role you will be computer literate, have good experience of programming and operating Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Graphical User Interface (GUI) screens, and of implementing and following safety procedures. Key responsibilities will also include equipment set up, basic fault finding and identification, and tool changes. You may also be required to design and manufacture bespoke fixtures, jigs and test pieces using manual design methods or CAD/CAM software, and carry out other tasks relevant to the role. Therefore, good practical and general engineering skills are key.
This opportunity is based at the Sunderland site and you would be supported by a small but expanding multi-disciplinary engineering team pioneering new PEMD manufacturing processes. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure effective collaboration with internal team members and external customers.
This full-time position includes excellent benefits such as Newcastle University’s highly-competitive holiday and pension packages, and flexible working times. There will be no regular shift or weekend work unless specifically required by a project: this is likely to be infrequent and, should it be required, will be by agreement and compensated to suit.
