Job Introduction

Renowned and loved throughout the UK and the world, the BBC has become a household name that delivers online content to more than 25 million people globally and we are proud to say that we help make that magic happen!

Do you want to want to lead a team but still remain hands-on with the coding?

We are looking for aspiring team leads who are ready to make the transition from coding as a full time role to building a career within technical management.

You will get to retain a solid technical understanding of systems and remain close to the solutions being developed. You will have equal focus on people, processes, delivery and the governance around these.

We offer a warm welcome with full support settling in and foster a culture where everyone has an opportunity to succeed. We embed inclusion and diversity in everything we do.

We work in highly collaborative team of engineers, testers, UX designers and product owners.

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how and when they work, with a hybrid working approach and flexibility with hours, giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.

We recognise the need to stay fresh in the ever-changing technology landscape. To support this, our engineers also receive 10% development time built into our 35 hour working week.

Main Responsibilities

Our Software Engineering Team Leads are passionate about developing people and nurturing them as engineers to build great things. You will lead a team of engineers working on building the platforms and systems that power compelling products for our audience. You will be responsible for ensuring your team are engaged and performing as effectively as possible.

These roles enable you to sharpen your technical acumen and improve leadership skills and industry knowledge that are highly valued in engineering management roles – quite possibly at a pace that will surprise you.

We'll support you in using your engineering expertise to lead a multi skilled engineering team, enabling the delivery of solutions to create value, drive efficiency and increase performance for our organisation. You’ll have end-to-end ownership of products across the entire stack.

We'll show you how drive technical excellence, ownership and self-organisation at team, divisional and group level, as well as act as coach and mentor to your team, helping them learn and become better in their craft.

With a competitive salary, world-class in-house training and professional development on offer, this is a perfect opportunity for a senior/lead developer who is ready to take on leading a small team of engineers and progress to leadership roles in the future.

Are you the right candidate?

We focus on hiring for potential at the BBC and transferable skills are very welcome. We understand not everyone may tick all the essential boxes, however we strongly encourage you to apply if you can demonstrate how you would deliver the fundamentals of the role.

We’d love to hear from you if you have some of the following skills:

  • Experienced senior/lead software engineer who is ready to step up and lead a team
  • Passionate about creating impact through empowering others and believe in supportive and humble leadership
  • Self-driven, ambitious and results focused. You chart a path for others rather than follow one
  • Passionate about technology and using it as a tool to provide great audience experiences
  • Committed to growing and hiring a diverse and brilliant engineering team. We invest continuously in diversity and want to foster a creative and dynamic work environment
  • AWS experience
  • Java/JavaScript experience
  • An aspiration for engineering excellence, using knowledge sharing to learn from each other
