The Role
Aberystwyth Arts Centre is a flagship venue for the Arts in Wales, and our trading outlets are an important part of the customer experience for our visitors. Delivering a unique quality offer through our cafes, bars and shops, we pride ourselves on following 3 guiding principles of provenance, sustainability and people centred. Maintaining high levels of customer care, our Trading Assistants work as part of a large team, working flexibly across the Arts Centre. Trading Assistants can expect to work in any of our outlets from our cafes and bars to our retail outlets and on occasion opportunities in other customer facing roles within the Arts Centre. A high-quality service is expected across all the Arts Centre’s activities, from regular trading to large scale private functions and conferences. What you’ll do
This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
Responsible to: Working Team Leader / Duty Supervisor
Location: Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Hours: Shift patterns vary to cover the business need, based on the Arts Centre’s busy events programme, candidates must therefore be flexible and will be expected to work evenings and weekends.
The position is physically demanding therefore it is essential that the successful applicant has an appropriate level of health and fitness. Appointment to this position may be subject to a satisfactory fitness assessment.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- To provide the highest levels of customer service to Arts Centre visitors at all times ensuring their visit is a positive one.
- Be informative to visitors on the Arts Centre and its programme of events and activities.
- Be knowledgeable of the products being sold, including such things as allergens, prices, and provenance.
- Maintain areas of work such as counters, serveries and customer environments to the highest standards of cleanliness.
- Maintaining adequate stocks in the front of house areas and replenishment of displays, setting out of counters and food displays as directed by the line manager.
- To work in a manner that complies with HACCP, COSHH, the Arts Centre Food Safety Policy, and University Health & Safety Policy.
- Attending team meetings as and when required.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To be in the area of work at the agreed time according to the staff rota.
- To be dressed in the correct uniform as laid out in the uniform policy.
- To ensure that when you are unable to work you follow the absence policy.
- To ensure that all tasks given are carried out in an efficient and timely manner.
- To be courteous to all customers and fellow members of staff at all times.
- To ensure that you notify your line manager of any training requirements.
- To work in line with all University policies and procedures.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post, recognising all staff are responsible for a safe working environment for staff and customers.
- To be committed to the University’s Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post.
- Any other duties reasonably requested.

Essential
- Experience of working in a relevant environment
- Experience of having worked successfully as a member of a team.
- Good interpersonal skills in order to receive, understand and convey straightforward information.
- An aptitude for working well with other colleagues.
- A flexible working attitude and willingness to learn.
- The ability to work unsupervised.
- An awareness of the bilingual nature of the University.
- The ability to operate at Standard A1
Desirable
- Relevant qualifications which may include but would not be limited to:
- Basic food safety certificates.
- First aid training.
- Allergen training
- Manual handling training.
- COSHH training.
- Customer service qualification.
- Previous catering experience in an arts based venue
- The ability to take the initiative and act appropriately under pressure.
- The ability to operate at Standard B2
