The Role
Aberystwyth Arts Centre is a flagship venue for the Arts in Wales, and our food & drink service prides itself on delivering a unique quality offer based around 3 guiding principles of provenance, sustainability and people centred. Maintaining high levels of customer care, the Food & Drink Supervisor will work as part of a large team and supervise assistants on a day-to-day basis. You will be required to be flexible in your approach to the varied jobs in the cafes & bars. A high-quality service is expected across all the Arts Centre’s activities, from regular trading to large scale private functions and conferences. Qualifications in food safety laws, health and safety regulations and licencing laws as appropriate are required. This is a great opportunity to be part of a creative work environment.

What you’ll do

Responsible to: Arts Centre Trading Operations Manager
Responsible for: Customer service assistants located in the catering or bar facilities. This will entail supervising staff on a day-to-day basis when acting as a supervisor.
Location: Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Hours: Shift patterns vary to cover the business need, based on the Arts Centre’s busy events programme, candidates must therefore be flexible and will be expected to work evenings and weekends.
The position is physically demanding therefore it is essential that the successful applicant has an appropriate level of health and fitness. Appointment to this position may be subject to a satisfactory fitness assessment.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- To provide the highest levels of customer service to Arts Centre visitors at all times.
- As part of a team, the supervisor will oversee the work of customer service assistants in the relevant area, on a day-to-day basis, under the guidance of the manager or Team Leader
- Feeding back to the manager on a regular basis regarding quality standards in the trading/catering area, and offering suggestions on improvements.
- Occasionally assisting with the drafting of staffing rotas for catering/trading areas.
- Ensuring the food outlet or bar and surrounding areas are kept clean at all times.
- Ensuring food and drink displays are well stocked and standards of presentation are maintained throughout the day.
- Monitoring and acting on reports relating to stock levels and liaising, as necessary, with the manager. Occasionally, in the absence of the manager, placing orders as required.
- Adhere to health and safety protocols and regulations as directed by the manager and undergo on-going training towards accredited food hygiene qualifications and other relevant statutory qualifications.
- Attending team meetings as and when required.
- Working with the customer service assistants to:
- a. Replenishing and rotating stock as appropriate (including changing barrels). Training the customer service assistants to undertake this role.
- Handle cash and taking card payments in accordance with University regulations and cash handling procedures.
- Clean or wash all equipment, work areas and public areas as required in accordance with training provided and to the highest professional standard.
- Completing cleaning schedules and temperature logs.
- Maintain excellent customer relations with all visitors and, during the shift, dealing with any issues raised by customers and responding accordingly. This will be done in accordance with protocols established for the trading area and training will be given.
- On-going training and mentoring of customer service assistants in all matters relating to health, safety and hygiene in the trading area.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
- Basic food safety certificates.
- Maths GCSE (Grade A-C) or equivalent
- Experience of working in a relevant environment: bar work or café and/or experience of staffing conferences or functions.
- Experience of having worked successfully as a member of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a variety of customers.
- An aptitude for working well with other colleagues and the confidence to take decisions as required in the absence of a manager.
- The ability and aptitude to take initiative and act appropriately under pressure.
- The ability to work unsupervised.
- An awareness of the bilingual nature of the University.
- The ability to operate at Standard A1
Desirable
- Relevant qualifications which may include but would not be limited to:
- First aid training.
- Manual handling training.
- COSHH training.
- Customer service qualification.
- Any BII awards.
- Experience of supervising staff in a relevant environment.
- The ability to operate at Standard C1
