Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Clinical:

  • Evaluates, establishes goals based on evaluation findings, and develops treatment interventions.
  • Implements and modifies as necessary treatment plan and goals as needed throughout course of treatment to ensure optimum outcomes.
  • The Creative Arts Therapist is expected to perform documentation of patient care including assessments, progress notes, encounters, consultations, care plans, and other reports as needed.
  • Uses Creative Arts therapy expertise for direct service delivery to patients. Acts as a subject matter expert to staff, students, and healthcare professionals.
  • Serves as Creative Arts Therapy representative on interdisciplinary teams as assigned or needed.
  • In consultation with patients, their families, and caregivers, Recreation Therapist shall educate as required regarding treatment interventions and goals, in addition to any consideration involving adaptations to better ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
  • Demonstrates ability and competency in treating patients that range in age from young adult to geriatric who may experience complex medical or mental health issues.
  • The Creative Arts Therapist must have the ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment interventions to address the complexity of the diagnosis and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in-depth specific assessment of function and utilization of unconventional methods and techniques.
  • Creative Arts Therapist independently interpret provider referrals and consults; and apply all health and safety regulations to minimize the mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and the environment of care.
  • Creative Arts Therapist independently utilize appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care in areas such as, but not limited to recommendations for recreation/creative arts therapy assistive devices, including fit and function.
Administrative:
  • Adheres with Medical Center policies. Utilizes Automated Data Processing (ADP) system in accordance with established procedures. Adheres to Medical Center ADP Security policy.
  • Participates in the evaluation of equipment and supplies, which affect their service delivery.
  • Fosters and maintains a safe treatment area.
  • Promotes effective communication with all patients, caregivers, treatment team members, Medical Center staff and community partners.
Education:
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in appropriate educational activities.
  • Assists in teaching and providing learning experiences for Recreation Therapy clinical interns as required.
  • Participates in staff orientation, successfully completes Medical Center assigned mandatory trainings, and in-service activities.
  • Deliver treatment in compliance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) accrediting agencies and VHA directives.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Education: The following education requirements apply to the creative arts therapist (dance/movement):
    • A master's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major or an emphasis in dance therapy or dance/movement therapy. The degree must be approved by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). OR,
    • A master's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, and must be a board-certified dance/movement therapist (BC-DMT) approved by the Dance Movement Therapy Certification Board (DMTCB). If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.
      • NOTE. Dance/movement therapy coursework that began on or after March 15, 2013, must have been approved by the ADTA subcommittee for the approval of alternate route courses.
  • Certification Creative Arts Therapy (Dance/Movement): Applicants must be board-certified in dance/movement therapy by the DMTCB. If hired under paragraph 3b(3)(b), certification cannot be waived.
    • Exception: Noncertified applicants, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for registration and/or certification, may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate creative arts therapist, under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B), for a period not to exceed two years. Applicants who fail to obtain registration and/or certification during this temporary full-time appointment may be terminated. The exception only applies to positions at the GS-9 level. For grade levels at or above the full performance level, the candidate must be registered and/or certified.
Grade Determinations:

GS-9, Creative Arts Therapist (Dance/Movement):
Experience/Education: None beyond the basic requirements

GS-11, Creative Arts Therapist (Dance/Movement):
Experience: At least one year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level (GS-9).

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
  • Ability to independently analyze and interpret assessment data for the development of an interdisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Skill in implementing specialized programming in accordance with internal and external regulatory requirements, including patient safety.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a safe therapeutic environment to promote expression through dance/movement therapy.
  • Knowledge of foundational dance/movement therapy techniques, protocols, and treatment interventions that are considered best practices.
  • Skill in developing and selecting dance/movement therapy interventions for use with specific populations for therapeutic purposes (i.e., emotional regulation, containment and structure, etc.).
  • Ability to assess and use patient cultural backgrounds and values in dance/movement treatment planning and interventions.
