Job description

Refugee Arts and Culture Hub Manager in Great Yarmouth

About Us

The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association is an award-winning charity founded by Dr Nooralhaq Nasimi, who arrived as a refugee in the back of a refrigerated container with his young family in 1999. We promote social and economic integration of an increasing number of Afghan, Ukrainian and other refugees. We use a community development ethos to support the development of their potential within a mutually supportive framework and we work with a wide range of partners to reach vulnerable and isolated individuals and families in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK.

Our experience and the quality of our provision is evidenced through our many achievements, including:

  • Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2018, awarded in recognition of the excellent work and central role that volunteers play in the delivery of the essential services run by the ACAA
  • Talent Match Mark Youth Friendly Gold Award from Youth Employment UK
  • The charity's founder, Dr Nasimi, was awarded an MBE for services to refugees by King Charles III in the New Year Honours List 2023.

Project Description

This project plans to increase volunteering and reduce chronic loneliness among young Afghan, Ukrainian and other refugee women (aged 16-34) by launching an Arts and Culture Hub in Great Yarmouth. The programme will empower 160 refugee women over a two year period (80 per year) by enabling them to move out of their crammed conditions in bridging hotels/temporary accommodation and participate in various artistic and cultural activities, strengthen social connections, preserve their identity, connect with others of similar interests and from diverse cultural backgrounds, build support networks, and reduce isolation.

We will run two sessions per week. Each session will last two hours. Each session will be attended by 25-30 participants who will take part in a variety of activities including:

- Music sessions – singing in native languages and listening to folkloric music

- Poetry sessions – reading poems and writing unconventional styles of poetry including blackout poetry, postcard poetry, found poetry, visual poetry, and spoken word.

- Art sessions – mixed media art, experimental painting, collaborative art, upcycled art, and mosaics.
