Job description
Reports to: Registrar and Collection Manager; Lead Preparator
The art handler is a per-diem/on-call position assisting with installation/deinstallation
of artwork and historical objects for special exhibitions and on-going collection
projects in the galleries and storage areas of the Hudson River Museum (HRM) located
in Yonkers, New York.
Art handlers will generally work during three to five week changeover periods,
usually occurring in May-June, September-November, and January-February, with
opportunities for other work throughout the year on an on-call, intermittent basis.
Work hours are typically 9:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday.
Position Responsibilities:
- Prepare, move, and install artworks, at the direction of the Lead Preparator
- Assist with incoming and outgoing art and equipment shipments
- Prepare gallery spaces for exhibition, including patching and painting
- Assist in the construction and preparation of exhibition furniture
- Assist with matting and framing of artworks
- Assist with the installation of A/V equipment, including speakers, monitors,
- Assist with lighting exhibitions, including changing fixtures and bulbs.
- Install labels, signage, and other didactic materials
- Prepare and organize tools and equipment required for installation and
- Assist with the periodic cleaning and inventories of the galleries and
- Assist with curatorial housekeeping and displays in Glenview, the Museum’s
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Minimum three years of similar work experience in a museum, commercial
- Expertise in safe handling techniques for a variety of artwork and artifacts
furniture
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work on ladders
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic carpentry tools, machinery, and safety
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Absolute discretion when encountering sensitive information and interacting
Rate: $30 / hourly
