  • Duration: 17 April to 13 October 2023 (term time only)
  • Status: Part Time (25hrs/wk, term time only)
  • Reporting to: Heads of Design Technology and Art

Purpose of the Post: To support within a teaching and learning environment by providing well-organised, safe and effective resources for the two, interdisciplinary departments.

The Department: Merchiston’s design departments comprise three, full-time teaching staff based within our Robertson Building. The departments’ curricula place a strong emphasis on creativity and innovative, problem-solving through rapid prototyping as well as more traditional resources. The technician has a fully-equipped, preparation workshop.

Relationships and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff, other support staff e.g. qualified electricians, and boys aged 11-18 years across a highly varied mix of tasks. While playing a full, proactive part in lessons in art and design practical activities, procurement, health and safety procedures, our technician will demonstrate sound subject knowledge and commitment to safeguarding children and young people. In addition, we welcome flexibility in response to the needs of the Departments and the wider team.

The Post: Duties will include:

  • Overseeing the organisation of the workshops, ensuring equipment and resources are correctly stored and rooms are kept safe, organised and well-presented;
  • Preparing resources for practical lessons;
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff to ensure the smooth running of the department;
  • Liaison with other departments such as facilities, estates and IT Support, as may be necessary to ensure the smooth running of the department;
  • Undertaking administrative tasks including procurement;
  • Assisting in the updating departmental risk assessments and COSHH requirements;
  • Ensuring the safety of equipment, including but not limited to equipment testing and maintenance, repairs and co-ordination of specialist trades;
  • Ensuring consumable stock control, as required by teaching staff;
  • Following safety precautions and procedures and having knowledge of health and safety as relevant to the subject areas.
  • Advising teaching staff of any safety concerns;
  • Undertaking other, reasonable tasks as may be required from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in e.g. design technology, engineering or equivalent experience;
  • Relevant Health and Safety Qualification or commitment to work towards;
  • First Aid Qualification or commitment to work towards.

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a technical role, either in a School or other industry;
  • Experience of working in a School.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Excellent technical knowledge, including strong IT skills;
  • Ability to deal with minor incidents, including First Aid;
  • Knowledge of School curriculum and ability to support teachers in delivering the practical elements of their subject area;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of safe working practices.
