About the role
Apprentice Arborist
Embarking on an apprenticeship at Amey is an incredible journey allowing you to gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst obtaining practical work experience and building core skills to help progress and shape the direction of your career!
Our 24-month apprenticeship programme combines the opportunity to gain your Arborist Level 2 Apprenticeship standard, whilst developing practical experience of working as part of a small team gaining real hands on experience working as part of our involvement on Sheffield’s largest highways infrastructure contract, Street’s Ahead worth £2bn!
Working as part of a small team, you’ll be responsible to carry out all aspects of highways tree maintenance, including the following:
- Use of chainsaws
- Tree climbing and aerial rescue
- Storm clearance
- Stump grinding
- Tree planting and young tree maintenance
- Operate light plant and power tools
- Drive, operate vehicles, plant, machinery as required
- Install and maintain traffic management systems
- Carry out any other duties which may reasonably be expected/requested
- To keep records, complete all necessary paperwork, communicate and liaise with other employees of Amey, subcontractors, the emergency services, the general public, clients and customers
- Undertake vehicle and small plant checks
The qualification
We have partnered with Askham Bryan College who will devlier and support you working towards the achievement of this Apprenticeship. You will receive 1-2-1 support with our partnered training provider, e-learning materials and workplace support including a mentor in the workplace to ensure continuous development. As part of our Arborist Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard, you will also gain a Level 3 award in emergency first aid at work, Level 2 award in safe use of brushwood chipper, Traffic Management (NRSWA Unit 002 Signing, Lighting and Guarding) OR Sector Scheme 12D, Level 2 award in chainsaw maintenance, Level 2 award in crosscutting timber using a chainsaw, Level 2 award in felling and processing trees up to 380mm, Level 2 award in accessing a tree using a rope and harness, Level 3 award in aerial tree rescue operations, Level 3 award in aerial cutting of trees using free fall techniques, Level 2 award in safe use of mobile elevated work platform and a Level 3 award in use of a chainsaw from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP).
What are we looking for from you?
One of the best things about an Apprenticeship with us is that you don’t need to have experience of working in this area. However, you will need to share our passion and demonstrate your desire to develop yourself within this exciting area.
We keep our list of essential requirements to a minimum:
- Minimum qualification requirements are:
- Minimum 2 GCSE’s (or equivalent) Grade A*-D. Must include Maths and English
- Available to commence employment with Amey in September 2023
- The commitment and drive to complete your course and final assessment
- Passion to develop your skills both professionally and personally.
- Driving license
- Must able to get to the centre of Sheffield for 07:30
