The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants, ours is a diverse workforce with many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Amy.

The Defence School of Transport (DST) was formed in 1996 to provide driver and transport management training to personnel from the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.

The school trains 10,000 service personnel every year, delivering outstanding training on road-going and specialist military vehicles. Training is conducted in classrooms, lecture theatres, demonstration areas, a purpose-built road and cross-country training area and on public roads.

DST can train up to 1,500 personnel at any time making us the largest residential driving school in the World. We are recognised as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by: DHL, Eddie Stobbart, the US Army, the US Marine Corps and the French Army amongst others.

We are looking for friendly, well-organised and adaptable individuals to work alongside other Civil Servants and military personnel and be part of the team.

The role of a Storekeeper is hands on and customer facing, therefore, there is an expectation to be on site for the working week.

Job description

The Storekeeper position is an essential role within the Defence School of Transport within the Quarter Masters Department, responsible for the management and control of direct support to the business requirements, ensuring the smooth operation and running of the clothing, accommodation, disposals and tools stores.

You will ensure that stock levels are maintained and distributed to trainees and permanent staff as required. You will also log equipment levels on the relevant computer systems.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who has strong customer service skills along with basic digital literacy. They will demonstrate the ability to react quickly and positively to change and will understand the importance of following manual handling regulations.

A great teammate, the successful candidate will be able to work closely with their civilian and military colleagues, as well as managing their own time effectively.

The principal area is linked to stores control, equipment issues and receipts in their area from both internal and external agencies for condition and accuracy.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management of the day to day running of the store
  • Issuing and receipting equipment to personnel, stores and specialist communication equipment
  • Keeping the stores areas clean and tidy and ensuring training equipment is always clean and serviceable and ready for use
  • Maintaining documentation for stores accounting and auditing
  • The delivery and maintenance of goods and services to meet the demand of the site
  • Maintenance of stock levels to meet demand
  • Action Receipts and Issues, returns and disposals, and ensure they are logged on the appropriate systems
  • Carry out security checks and securing all stores at cessation of work

The role requires a good level of IT skills as there is a requirement to use Management Information Systems and MS Office applications.

Full training will be provided on using our MOD systems for stock control and inventory.

There is a requirement that to hold a Cat B driving licence due to the size and scope of DST and the requirement to transport stores and equipment around the site or training area using a vehicle.

A Storekeeper role requires a degree of physical ability as you will be expected to lift and carry furniture, boxes of rations and equipment around the store (also load / offload vehicles), and place / retrieve items and boxes from shelving that may be above head height. In accordance with HSE guidance, the recommended maximum manual handling weight that applicants can expect to lift is men (25kg) and women (16kg).


This post may attract the opportunity for overtime as the maybe a demand on the store which is outside normal working hours.

There is a requirement that to hold a Cat B driving licence due to the size and scope of DST and the requirement to transport stores and equipment around the site or training area using a vehicle.
