What you offer?

Reporting to the Neighbourhood Day Camp Coordinator, the NDC Camp Area Supervisor supervises and implements the delivery of quality recreational programs, services, and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled in Neighbourhood Day Camp programs. The NDC Camp Area Supervisor supervises counsellors and program staff and provides them with tools to create a meaningful camp experience for all participants as they engage in summer camp activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, build self-confidence and establish lasting friendships.

  • Ottawa-West-Nepean

  • Clarence-Rockland

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Give first priority to the camper’s needs. Provide behaviour management to campers aligning with the child’s age and development.
  • Assist in the creation, development, and maintenance of programs at Camp - program templates with activities listed will be provided by the supervisor.
  • Provide high-quality facilitation of all program areas at Camp. Responsible for ensuring staff are provided with activity templates and are delivering the quality program in accordance with safety protocols and standard practices.
  • Supervise Section Heads, Program Staff or Camp Counsellors. Support in the training of staff while providing counselling staff with tools to manage their camper’s behavior.
  • Provide customer service to all of our parents and campers. Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with program participants, members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Perform some housekeeping responsibilities – sanitation of equipment, program areas, assist in set up and take down of equipment.
  • Ensure the safety and protection of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA-YWCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff.
  • Staff will be required to swim or be in pools with the participants.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Language

  • Ability to work in English
  • Bilingualism an asset

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • National Lifeguard Certification, Bronze Cross, Paddle Canada, or other relevant certifications are strongly considered assets for this position
  • CUI Level 1 or Level 2 or previous high ropes experience/hours is considered an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff, and volunteers
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Experience in day or residential camps in positions with progressive leadership and responsibility
  • Sound knowledge of child development
  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working in and around camping and outdoor education and a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in and around camping and outdoor education

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons and submit the certificate of completion.
  • As per the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons Policy, the staff of the YMCA will take allegations of abuse seriously.
  • All staff members are familiar with their duty to report and the procedure for reporting suspected abuse or neglect of a child.
