Archive Assistant Street, England
Job description
Magdalene College
CAMBRIDGE
Archive Assistant
Part Time (8 hours per week)
Magdalene is one of the most beautiful colleges in Cambridge, located near the city centre. The College occupies a delightful riverside site and has an eclectic range of buildings dating from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries, including the Pepys Building, one of the more attractive in Cambridge, and the award-winning New Library.
The College is seeking to appoint an Assistant to work on the digitisation of the letters in the archive of mountaineer George Mallory (d.1924). This is a part-time, temporary position, assisting the College Archivist and the Assistant will receive training.
The role involves the careful handling of letters, photographs and other archival materials, scanning and adding metadata to an existing database (AtoM). The Assistant will be required to read and summarise the contents of written materials for which guidance will be given.
It is anticipated that the Assistant will work alongside the College Archivist from 9am to 1pm on Mondays and Thursdays in the New Library Building, from 9th October 2023 to 31st January 2024, however there is some flexibility around this.
The role would suit a candidate with experience of handling and reading historical materials, with good verbal skills and excellent attention to detail. Familiarity with using databases would be an advantage but no advanced technical knowledge is required. An interest in, or a willingness to develop an interest in, social history and figures of the early twentieth century would be essential.
The position is part-time,8 hours a week, and attracts a rate of £12.13 per hour and excellent benefits including:
· Free lunch when in college
· 33 days holiday pro rata (including bank holidays)
· the use of sports facilities
