Job description

Title: Software Apprenticeship

Location: Milton Keynes

Salary: £24,000 (Rising upon successful completion each year)

Hours: Full-time

We’re HMGCC, His Majesty's Government Communications Centre. Don’t worry, if you’ve never heard of us, we are used to it! We’re all about exploring the limits of technology and discovering the unexpected. Our systems help protect national security – both at home and overseas.

Your role

As a Software Apprentice at HMGCC, you’ll complete an approximately three-year programme to earn a BSc Honours Degree in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Development). Plus, you’ll get a paid membership to a professional organisation such as the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Our apprentices get involved in real projects from the very start. So, while you’ll spend some time at our training providers’ sites in London or Manchester for learning and qualifications, you'll also get hands-on experience with sophisticated technologies in our local offices. During your first two years, you’ll gain experience in Software Engineering, before specialising in your final year based on your preferences and our business needs.

Our tech stack includes programming languages like Python, C#, C/C++, Java, and Java Script, and we also use modern platforms like Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Don’t worry if these are all new to you – we’ll teach you everything you need to know, so by the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be fluent in programming.

Once you complete the programme, you'll have a solid foundation to kick-start your career as a Software Developer. And here's the best bit – your journey doesn't end with an apprenticeship. At HMGCC, your career can be as diverse and progressive as you want it to be. And with your skills and determination, you'll prove something's only impossible until it isn't.

What you need

Along with a problem-solving mindset and an interest in programming or technology, you’ll also have (or be predicted to achieve) 72 UCAS points, a Maths and English GCSE at Grade C/4 or above or equivalent functional skills (Level 2).

Creative, curious, and passionate, you’re always up for trying new things and constantly improving. Whether it's sharing your ideas or absorbing knowledge from others, you're a true team player. And because you recognise the impact of our work, you'll bring integrity and professionalism to the table as we make a national impact together.

What we offer

Any opportunity this exciting is bound to feel a little daunting. But don’t worry, we’ll support you every step of the way. You'll have a dedicated buddy to guide you, and we'll make sure you gain hands-on experience through mentored work placements and customer projects. These opportunities will complement your classroom training, giving you the practical skills you need to grow.

On top of that, you'll enjoy all the great benefits that everyone who works with us does including 25 days’ annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years’ service), training and development opportunities, gym access, an excellent paid pension scheme and paid parental and adoption leave. You'll also have access to courses on time management, presenting skills, creative thinking, and more. Each programme is designed to help you make the most of your learning and practical sessions.

When you join us, you’ll be part of a welcoming, inclusive environment where people from a variety of backgrounds, with different perspectives and ideas, come together to develop brilliant solutions. We’re a recognised Disability Confident employer, meaning we’ll provide the support you need to perform at your best. If you have a disability, a long-term health condition or if you’re neurodivergent, we’ll make the reasonable adjustments you need to ensure you feel comfortable at work.
