Our Tech & Data teams focus on what’s behind the millions of daily transactions on London’s transport network. As a part of our fast-paced Technology & Data teams you’ll learn the skills required to support the teams that keep London Moving. Our Technology Service Operations team work across a range of technologies from coding languages such as python, C sharp, ABAP and lots of other exciting software. We use technology to improve the journeys of our customers, maximise the efficiency of our network and to extract insight from our data to enable us to make key business decisions.

What will I be doing?

As an apprentice, your 2-year, development programme will be made up of 6 or more placement rotations, for example: Asset Management, SAP, Digital, Professional Services, and Operations. Our aim is to give you the skills and breadth of experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1

Placement 1 – Professional Services - 6 Months

· Supporting applications and O365 Suite (SharePoint, MS Dynamics and Livelink Document management)

· Write and edit work instructions for tasks in technical area ensuring all work is completed to these standards

· Respond to and resolve incidents across a range of Professional Services completing small developments and fixing incidents

Placement 2 – SAP - 6 Months

· Using SAP work instructions, build a structure in SAP central management tool SOLMAN.

· Learn about SAP functional business processes across Hire to retire Record to Report and Procure to pay

· Gain an understanding of managing physical SAP and cloud servers

Placement 3 – Digital/ Analytics - 3 Months

· Learn basic Data Base Admin activities

· Rotate to work alongside the developers co coding new developments

· Transition CI/CD into service live across different sprints

Placement 4 – Asset Management - 3 Months

· Support Asset Management Systems such as Maximo, Ellipse and Mobile applications

· Responding to and resolving incidents across a range of LU, Surface and RFLI Asset Management Applications

· Working alongside subject matter and leading industry experts

Then you can select from the remaining areas to do a placement of 2-3 months:

· SPM Team – Service Performance Management Team, Stakeholder Engagement

· Operations Team for LU applications like Trackernet (Train Movement) & Electronic Incident Reporting

· Join project Development & Sprint teams to experience Agile Methodology and ways of working

There is flexibility for apprentices to tailor their scheme to their interests ensuring placements are taken within the Professional Services and LU & Rail teams. We are aware that some apprentices start with, or develop during their placements, an interest to a technology area and we want to ensure you get the most from your apprenticeship with TfL.

We recommend the first placement be within the Professional Services team. This will teach you the basics and will give you chance to learn how the TfL IT infrastructure is structured.

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off intoApplication Engineer, Service Analyst and DevOps Junior Engineerswhich could lead to further career development opportunities such as DevOps Engineer roles, Second and Third Line Support Analysts and SAP Analysts to ultimately Senior Application Engineers and beyond.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in I.T Solutions Technician.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager.

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee as well as an Alumni group, these groups are powerful networks in developing your understanding of the organisation, different apprenticeship schemes and opportunities to develop your career. Many current graduates and apprentices believe this to be a powerful support network and they often hold apprentice only events that are very beneficial to your continued learning.

Entry requirements

You should already hold or be working towards aminimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade 4 (C) and above or equivalent in Maths and English.

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.

You must be 18 years of age before 11 September 2023 to be eligible.
