We work with some of the most diverse and large data sets available and having a keen interest in how these work together will keep you inquisitive and striving to deliver products that benefit TfL.
Job overview
Our Tech & Data teams focus on what’s behind the millions of daily transactions on London’s transport network. In this role you will be working across a variety of roles within our Data team on a number of exciting projects, such as gaining insights from our WiFi data on the tube to understanding the complexities of our road network and all the vast data that it has to offer. As well as looking at new and exciting ways to make our data more accessible and bring the insight that it holds to life.
What will I be doing?
As an apprentice, your 2-year development programme will be made up of up to 5 placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:
Year 1
Placement 1 – Product Owner – 3 months – Stakeholder Engagement, Requirements gathering, User Story breakdown
Placement 2 – Data Architect - 3 months - Requirements Analysis, Data definition, Data Mapping
Placement 3 – Developer – 6 Months – Requirements Understanding, Development, Unit Testing
Placement 4 – Visualisation Developer – 6 months – Visualisation Development, User Acceptance Testing, Ops Hand Over
Placement 5 – Tester – 6 months – Test Plan, Automated Test scripts, Test Exit Reports
There will be some flexibility in the placements within the scheme, but we would want people to get a full rounded view across the team of all the roles to ensure the right fit for them longer term. No placement is 100% compulsory as there will be some cross over in areas depending on the project work and if people have a desire for a specific long-term area where we can ensure more focus.
Where can this career take me?
· Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off in to a number of roles within D&A such as a Developer, Visualisation Developer etc which could lead to further career development opportunities such as moving in to a Senior role or the technical lead for a discipline.
· There will be further opportunities to upskill and becoming accredited in a number of areas that are relevant to the technology stack of the department.
What training and support will you get?
You will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in Data Technician.
Typically, you will be required to attend college one day per week
Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.

Entry requirements
You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.
You must be 18 years of age before 11 September 2023 to be eligible for this scheme.
This is a technical role and although you will be supported throughout the scheme, we do recommend some technical background knowledge.
For those who do not have a GCSE level 4 (Grade C and above) or Functional skills level 2 in maths and English. It is a requirement that during your apprenticeship you must achieve functional skills level 2 in maths and English before your end point assessment. You will be supported to achieve this.
