This apprenticeship is based in Lowestoft.
What’s it all about?
As an island nation, over 95% of trade by volume goes by ship through more than 100 ports around the United Kingdom. UK ports employ around 118,000 people – from container and bulk cargo ports, to passenger terminals, to leisure and marinas. ABP’s Marine Operations Teams ensure the safe transit and handling of vessels in and out of the port. The Workboat Crewmember apprenticeship programme is designed for individuals who are interested in developing their career in a marine environment and provides a rare and exciting opportunity to learn about shipping and port operations.
Workboat crew members are part of a team working on a wide variety of specialist vessels ranging from tugs and multi-purpose workboats to fast pilot boats and crew transfer vessels taking personnel out to vessels or installations offshore. Workboats operate in varying marine environments such as construction of offshore windfarms, providing a range of services within a port or inland waterways, including surveys and towage. In addition, they may act as support vessels in major salvage operations and wreck removal. These vessels are typically less than 24m in length with accommodation for up to 5 persons.
How long does it take?
This apprenticeship involves rigorous and substantial training up to 3 years.
