Apprentice Technician
As a Technician you will be involved in all aspects of maintenance and repair, from routine servicing to the complete component overhaul of vehicle systems. The service provided by the workshop is a major factor considered by customers when they decide to replace their car therefore technicians are vital to customer care.
Working for Hawco Group you will be part of one of the few remaining family owned car retailers in the Highlands which has over 65 years’ experience delivering excellent service to motorists in the north of Scotland.
When you start your apprenticeship you will be required to go on training on a one week block release. Over the 3 years of the Service Technician Apprenticeship, you will be required to complete 16 weeks of training:
- Year 1 – You will have 6 weeks of training
- Year 2 – You will have 6 weeks of training
- Year 3 – You will have 4 weeks of training
You will learn in a well-equipped environment and in customer interaction areas at the Volkswagen Group’s National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes where an industry-standard learning environment has been created. A Vocational Learning Advisor will be your support and moderator during the Apprenticeship.
Job Responsibilities:
- Identify problems, often by using diagnostic equipment
- Test parts & systems to ensure they are working correctly
- Following checklists to ensure all critical parts are examined
- Bumper to bumper overview, service and inspection
- Cooling and lubrication, air & exhaust systems
- Maintenance of electronic systems such as braking & suspension, as well as steering, wheels and tyres
- Clutches, manual/auto gearboxes, drivelines
- Disassemble & reassemble parts
- Working with traditional, hybrid & electronic engines
- Maintain a clean & tidy work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety
- Maintain legible & accurate paperwork for the customer and for the centre’s records
Key Attributes and Skills:
- A minimum of Grade C in English, Maths and a Science subject
- The ability to work as part of a team to deliver excellent customer service
- Demonstrates an honest and diligent approach to work
- Has a flexible approach to time-keeping when completing jobs in order to achieve customer satisfaction
- Systematic and organised
- A full or provisional UK Driving Licence
Qualifications to Achieve:
On completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship you will receive the following qualifications:
- Level 3 Standard in Automotive Retail Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Light Vehicle
- Level 3 Qualification in Automotive Refrigerant Handling
- Volkswagen Group specific Hybrid Electric Vehicle training
- Advanced Apprenticeship Completion Certificate
- Volkswagen Group Service Technician Accreditation

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £4.30 per hour as of April 2021. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
