Apprentice Planner
Up to 48 month apprenticeship agreement (37 hpw Monday to Friday). Length of programme dependent upon entry level qualifications/experience.
Location
Bassetlaw District Council, based at Worksop, Nottinghamshire and working across the Bassetlaw area
The Role
We are investing in our Planning Service and have just moved through a proactive reorganisation of the Planning Enforcement function. As such there is now an exciting opportunity to work in this team and as part of the wider Development Management service.
The work we have is diverse, exciting and challenging and you will be working across two friendly teams who are dedicated, positive and focussed on quality and high performance.
You will be part of a team of officers at various professional grades and experience, such as chartered planners and those working towards that, CIL officers, planning enforcement officers a tree specialist and administrative support officers.
Your role will be to develop an understanding of Town and Country Planning legislation and in the first instance apply that to planning enforcement cases through the shadowing of more experienced officers. You will build up an independent caseload and be confidently able to manage breaches of planning control. After a set period of time, you will move to Development Management where you will learn how to interpret relevant policy and appraise planning applications accordingly, again with mentors to help you progress your understanding of process and knowledge.
This is a great opportunity to have more than a single discipline in the field of Planning. It offers insight into how two different service areas are intrinsically linked and how they function. There may also be an opportunity to extend this experience further into the Policy Team and that element is under review at this time.
You will be required to attend Sheffield Hallam University one day per week and fulfil the requirements of the MSc Urban Planning degree apprenticeship commencing in September 2023 whilst working and earning.
The District
Located in north Nottinghamshire between Nottingham to the south and Sheffield to the north, Bassetlaw is a predominantly rural district of circa 116,000 residents with much heritage, great connectivity (bus and rail both accessible from our offices) and a strong growth agenda. It is a popular place to live and visit with relatively low house prices, good schools, beautiful parks, an attractive environment and an outstanding community spirit which makes a move to any one of our four market towns a very positive investment into your future.
Whilst the service is primarily based in Queens Buildings in Worksop, we operate a hybrid approach whereby you may be required to work in the office and/or from home as determined by service requirements.
Who are you?
We are looking for someone who is keen to know about the statutory planning function and shape the environment appropriately. You will be a great communicator and have a general understanding about the purpose of planning.
We’ll offer excellent development opportunities and support you in learning the full breadth of this statutory service and over time you will become a competent, skilled, qualified and chartered town planner.
