Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Apprenticeship Degree in association with the University of Huddersfield.
This is an innovative opportunity to work towards becoming a Registered Operating Department Practitioner by gaining a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice, incorporating the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship standards for Operating Department Practice. This three year course combines work-based and academic learning between Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT) and the University of Huddersfield.
During this apprenticeship you will acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours required across different areas of perioperative care including anaesthetics, scrub and post anaesthetic care.
On successful completion of the degree you will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to enter the Register of Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs). On successful completion of the course you are guaranteed a band 5 post in the trust as an ODP.
Clinical Duties
- Deliver high quality, compassionate care under Direct supervision
- Practice in a manner that upholds the CHFT Trust valuesand behavioursat all times.
- Prepare an operating theatre/anaesthetic room for surgery in relation to instrumentation, equipment & supplies required for specific operative procedures, ensuring waste is kept to a minimum. In the case of anaesthetics ensure all necessary and emergency equipment is available and in working order
- Record the patient’s theatre episode of care in the Electronic Patients Record (EPR) and Bluespier, record in a timely and accurate manner.
- To promote and protect the interest and dignity of patients. Delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.
- Comply with policies/procedures and in particular, issues relating to Health and Safety, COSSH, Incidents Reporting and the Data Protection Act.
- Work with a mentor whilst taking responsibility for developing own competence while on placements.
- Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, both to paid work and academic studies.Seek support / guidance in timely manner if any difficulties are encountered.
- Successfully complete all educational elements of the degree as specified by Huddersfield University,Participate in regular Tri-partite meetings with the Trust and HEI. Work towards completing clinical competencies in an electronic portfolio each year leading towards completion of an End Point Assessment (EPA).

The postholder: -
- Preparing an operating theatre/anaesthetic room for surgery in relation to instrumentation, equipment and supplies required for specific operative procedures, ensuring waste is kept to a minimum. - Record the patient’s theatre episode of care in the Electronic Patients Record (EPR) and Bluespier record in a timely and accurate manner.
- Act as a preceptor/mentor for student ODPs, student nurses, trainee associate nurses, and HCAs, where appropriate within your area of expertise.
- To work as a team member without being under supervision and supervise and mentor junior staff to run an operating list.
- Perform scrub, circulating and/or anaesthetic PACU duties within the specialist area.
- Be responsible for appropriate delegation of tasks to other staff members.
- Comply with policies and procedures and in particular, issues relating to Health and Safety, COSHH, Incident Reporting and the Data Protection Act.
- To act in the scrub role, circulating role, anaesthetic or PACU role on a daily basis within your scope of practice
- Responsible for maintaining a clean, safe working environment after use and between theatre cases, ensuring safe disposal of all clinical and other waste in accordance with policies
- To ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained. Report to the team leader when standards are not being maintained.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels. Be aware of the need for economy when monitoring stock.
- To participate in the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care
- To recognise changes in patients condition which require the intervention of others and refer on as appropriate
- Act as a ‘Link Practitioner’ within a defined speciality/interest area
- Assist with the transfer of patients within the department including the positioning of patients using correct procedures in accordance with local manual handling protocols
- To work with the HCPC/NMC code of professional practice, and within policies and procedures and guidelines of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
- To promote and protect the interest and dignity of patients
- To manage verbal complaints, informing senior members of staff and refer on when unable to resolve
- To participate in investigation of incidents/complaints as required
- To establish and maintain effective communication, both verbal and written and relationships within a multi-disciplinary team
- Have an awareness of team member skills and capabilities and be able to delegate tasks appropriately
- Act as an innovative and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership, guidance and advice to staff on operational and professional issues
- Contribute to the development of clinical areas, through contribution of new ideas to improve patient care and experience.
- To have budgetary awareness
- Participate in regular supervision
- Attend all mandatory training
- Ensure maintenance of professional registration
- Participate annually identifying, developing and agreeing your own development plan with your line manager using the Trust appraisal process.
